Enrolments

Is it possible to register for an in-depth course even if I do not yet fulfil the prerequisites?

In principle, yes. If, for example, the grade from a seminar is still missing for admission to an in-depth course or the seminar is to be taken in the same semester as the in-depth course, this can be noted in the comments field when registering. Most lecturers are accommodating here. However, admission is of course in the hands of the professor and must be decided on a case-by-case basis. It is best to contact the lecturer directly.

How do I register for courses?

You can register for a course via the LFU student portal: online in the following steps:
1. select courses
2. select faculty: Faculty of Social and Political Sciences
3. select degree programme: Bachelor's degree programme in Sociology / Master's degree programme in Sociology: Social and Political Theory / Interfaculty Master's degree programme in Gender, Culture and Social Change / Doctor of Philosophy degree programme in Sociology
4. select compulsory modules or elective modules
5. Select the relevant course
6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Register for course

There are several courses available to you, especially for the proseminars. These are offered by different professors and at different times. You can freely select a course according to your preferences.

You can view all your course registrations under My course registrations. Here you can see, after the registration deadline, whether you have been admitted to the course or you can deregister here within the registration deadline.

Always make sure you enrol within the enrolment period. This is indicated next to the enrolment button.

How do I register for exams?

Exam registration follows the same principle as course registration (via LFU: online):
1. courses
2. choose faculty: Faculty of Social and Political Sciences
3. select degree programme: Bachelor's degree programme in Sociology / Master's degree programme in Sociology: Social and Political Theory / Interfaculty Master's degree programme in Gender, Culture and Social Change / Doctor of Philosophy degree programme in Sociology
4. select compulsory modules or elective modules
5. Select the relevant course
6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Register for exam

At least three examination dates are offered per semester. For example, if you can only sit the second date, this will still count as your first attempt. You have a total of five opportunities to take the exam.

Always note the registration deadline for the examinations. It is no longer possible to register after the deadline. The course instructor will announce the registration deadline during the course or by email, or you can also view it on the above-mentioned page (next to the registration button).

You can view your exam registrations under My course registrations. You can deregister at least three days before the exam (button: To deregister - If you do this, the examination entry will not be counted).

Commissioned examination

The fourth and fifth examinations take the form of a board examination. At your request, this also applies to the third attempt. In the case of a board examination, an examination senate is formed, which is made up of the respective course instructor and two other lecturers from the institute; you must select these yourself and contact them to obtain their consent. Further information on registration and the procedure for a board examination can be obtained from the relevant examination office.

Recognitions/credits

How can I have examinations from other degree programmes (or other universities) credited towards my sociology degree?

If there is a sufficient overlap in content, you can have courses recognised for your degree programme that you have completed as part of another degree programme (e.g. if you are completing another degree programme parallel to your sociology degree programme or have already studied at another university).

Have interdisciplinary skills or individual specialisations recognised:

A so-called "application" is required for recognition. This includes the form "Application for recognition of examinations", the form "Supplementary sheet", your study sheet and the certificates or proof of academic success for examinations for which you are applying for recognition. Both forms can be found further down on this page. Fill them out completely, sign both sides of the "Application for recognition of examinations" form and send all documents in pdf format directly to the Examinations Office (pruefungsreferat@uibk.ac.at).

Have it recognised as a compulsory module:

The possibility of recognition must first be checked by the study officer. To do this, complete the forms "Application for recognition of examinations" and "Supplementary form" (both can be found further down on this page). Sign both sides of the "Application for Recognition of Examinations" form. Enclose your study record sheet and the certificates or proof of academic success for the examinations you are applying to have recognised. For these examinations, also attach a brief description of the course content (e.g. the curriculum). Send everything in pdf format to the study representative (bernhard.weicht@uibk.ac.at).
For the BA module "Selected Topics in Sociology", credits will only be recognised in exceptional cases.

What can I do after graduation?

Students are often unclear about the wide range of career opportunities that a sociology degree programme offers. The question "What do I do afterwards?" accompanies many of us throughout our studies. Social clichés of sociology graduates driving taxis or the assessment of the degree programme as an "interest course", which should only be chosen as a second degree, are not very encouraging.

For this reason, the Institute of Sociology has organised the information event "Sociology as a career" in cooperation with the student representatives. Here, sociology graduates report on their experiences in the professional world, give valuable tips for starting a career and show the wide range of career opportunities for sociologists, because one thing is clear: yes, we are in demand in the professional world!

Sociologists offer a wide range of knowledge about society as such. Thanks to their scientifically sound, analytical and critical perspective, they can look behind the scenes of interactions and processes between people, groups, institutions and areas of society, and their methodological knowledge enables them to gain a foothold in many professional fields.
