CANADIAN FAIRYTALES

Christine Mayr (Märchenerzählerin aus Montréal)

At the age of five Christine Mayr, born in Austria and living in Montreal, found the hidden entrance to fairyland and has been telling stories ever since. Now, as a grandmother, she spins her yarn, weaving it around you, inviting you to enter her tales: tales of wisdom and wonder: the wisdom of laughter, the sheer wonder of being alive…. 

She has been invited to Festivals in Quebec and Newfoundland, in Austria and Italy but enjoys as much to tell in private homes, shelters, bars, student cafés and libraries – wherever there are open ears and hearts. She has told to the blind and the deaf, to youths in conflict with the law, to immigrants, homeless people – and of course - to everybody else, too.

Storytellingmakes her come alive.

Her repertoire includes folktales from all over the world as well as some of her own stories, told in English, French or German. Christine tells to audiences of all ages.

Lynne Hanson & The Good Intentions

Lynne Hanson wuchs in Ottawa, Kanada, auf, einer ruhigen Stadt mit  bitterkalten Wintern. Ein Ort an dem man kaum Southern-Style-Musiker erwartet: Manche bezeichnen ihre Musik als Americana, Roots, Folk mit Kanten oder besonders erdige Country-Music, Hanson selbst spricht lieber von "Verandamusik mit etwas texanischem Straßenstaub"(“porch music with a little red dirt" ) -

Ihr Album „River Of Sand”  war eine Hommage an den Mississippi und im Stile von Rosanne Cash.

Auf ihrem aktuellen fantastischen Album „7 Deadly Spins“ hat sich die Kanadierin den dunklen Seiten zugewandt und sich den „Murder Ballads“  verschrieben.

Man kann sich ihre Songs wunderbar als Soundtrack zu „True Detective“ vorstellen: Einiges erinnert an Handsome Family - Spooky, düster und langsam bewegen sich die Bilder aus den Songs . Man fühlt sich an Tom Waits und Bob Dylan erinnert, an Lucinda Williams und Gretchen Peters – sieht wie die Hitze in der Luft schwirrt.

Famous Canadian Immigrants

Für Schülerinnen und Schüler der AHS-Oberstufe und BHS

Seit jeher gilt Kanada als eines der wichtigsten Einwanderungsländer der Erde. Im Laufe der Geschichte hat es eine Reihe von Einwanderungswellen erlebt und auch aktuell begrüßt es jährlich eine hohe Anzahl von Einwanderinnen und Einwanderern. Ob in der Wissenschaft, in der Politik, im sport oder im Showbusiness – viele bekannte Kanadierinnen und Kanadier haben ihre Wurzeln in einem anderen Land.

Wähle eine erfolgreiche kanadische Persönlichkeit mit Migrationshintergrund (in erster oder zweiter Generation) und schreibe ein Essay im Umfang von ca. 900 Wörtern in englischer oder französischer Sprache. Dabei sind folgende vier Punkte zu behandeln:
o Warum hast du dich für die Person entschieden?
o Gibt es Informationen, aus welchen Gründen sie oder ihre Vorfahren nach Kanada ausgewandert sind?
o Welche Erfahrungen hat sie in Kanada gemacht?
o Wofür ist sie bekannt? Was sind ihre besonderen Leistungen?

Auf die Antworten zu diesen und vielen anderen Fragen sind wir gespannt.

Lecture-Reading

« Jeunes auteures franco-canadiennes : images au féminin en milieu minoritaire »

Catherine Parayre (Université Brock)

Cette présentation se penche sur l’œuvre de trois jeunes écrivaines franco-canadiennes – Tina Charlebois (Ontario), Sonia Lamontagne (Ontario) et Georgette LeBlanc (Nouvelle-Ecosse) – et est accompagnée d’images d’art canadien contemporain exposé au Centre d’art de Rodman Hall (St. Catharines, Ontario).

De plus en plus remarquée par la critique franco-minoritaire et par les auteurs franco-canadiens plus expérimentés, elles publient depuis peu et appartiennent aux voix les plus prometteuses de la littérature franco-canadienne. Chacune à sa façon, elles abordent la question de la culture minoritaire dans leurs écrits.

• Depuis Cornwall dans la région du fleuve Saint-Laurent, Tina Charlebois réclame avec verve une identité franco-ontarienne vécue au quotidien pour une génération jeune et résolument contemporaine. A ce jours, elle a publié trois recueils de poésie, Miroir sans teint (2014), Poils lisses (2006, Prix Trillium 2007) et Tatouages et testaments (2002).
• Auteure de Comptine à rebours (2015) et d’À tire d’ailes (2011, Prix Trillium poésie 2012), Sonia Lamontagne, originaire du Nord de l’Ontario, nous propose des textes intimistes, à la fois doux et inquiets, dans lesquels les questions existentielles côtoient l’évocation de l’effervescence culturelle des francophones de Sudbury.
• Pour sa part, Georgette LeBlanc a choisi d’écrire dans le français de la Baie-Sainte-Marie en Nouvelle Ecosse. Dans ses romans-poèmes, elle réinterprète et féminise l’histoire acadienne. Animées par l’oralité acadienne, ses œuvres Alma (2006, Prix Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie, 2007), Amédé (2010, Prix Chef d’œuvre de la Lieutenante-Gouverneure de la Nouvelle Ecosse 2010), Prudent (2013) et Le grand feu 2016) illustrent la vie des francophones de la cote Est.

Living in multicultural Canada? A neigbourhood experience (7F6TFK5A04, Veranstaltungsreihe Teile 1-2 Bildung bewegt)

Today’s world is facing a rapidly increasing internationalism. Thus, the conditions of multi-ethnic societies and questions of how to create the best possible conditions for an inclusion of newcomers are hotly debated issues. Is a peaceful, stimulating and cooperative coexistence of people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds possible? Canadian multiculturalism may offer an answer. It seems an ideal worth striving for, but it is also a project and an experiment that must constantly be revised and actively worked on to make it happen.

The workshop deals with past and present aspects of Canada as an immigrant country and looks at Canada’s concept of a multi-ethnic society. The various texts and materials discussed cover a broad range of genres (essays, newspaper articles, personal comments, short stories, novels, and plays) and introduce a variety of media.

For young people, who increasingly encounter a multicultural setup in their classrooms and who experience direct contact with foreign cultures as a normality, the study of multicultural Canada offers rewarding topics for classroom discussions.

Destributing Competences: Structures and Methods

Prof. François Rocher (School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa)

The 2017 edition of the Winter School will focus on “Federalism and Power-Sharing”.

Participants will analyze the legal structures of distribution systems, their interpretation by courts, and the differences between dual and integrated, coming-together and devolved systems. Furthermore, hot topics such as asymmetric federalism and the impact of federal power-sharing on key policy fields will be discussed. Among the practical case studies from different continents (Asia, Africa and Europe), special attention will be paid to the allocation of powers and subsidiarity in the European Union.
