How to prepare for the third pillar of science - let's call it computing or simulation? How to keep up with the ever-evolving computational tools relevant to one’s field of studies? This winter term, the Extension Programme Scientific Computing (EPSC) is back for its second year, offering 7 lectures on how to approach these challenges for modern scientists and professionals.

From physics to medicine, from the analysis of historical manuscripts to genome sequencing, modern science relies on the methods, techniques, and tools of scientific computing. The same is true for a growing number of professions and even political and social decision making, just think of the importance of computer modelling in predicting and combating climate change.  

The Extension Programme Scientific Computing (EPSC) offers a carefully orchestrated set of lectures: starting with the basics of scientific computing - modelling and numerics - through spotlights on modern software development for scientists and cutting-edge tools, to the implementation of high-performance computational programmes on specialized hardware. Available this winter term:

Introduction to Scientific Computing and Gender Competence (VO2, 2 ECTS-AP, LV 198701)
Get an overview of what scientific computing (and this extension program) is all about. A brief introduction and application examples from experts in various fields.

Software Management for Scientific Computing (VU2, 3 ECTS-AP, LV198702)
How to use modern tools and techniques for efficient, reproducible, and enjoyable computing. A quick look at Git, continuous integration, testing, containerization, ...

Basics of Scientific Computing (VU3, 5 ECTS-AP, LV 198703)
A gentle yet profound introduction to scientific computing as a tool, from modelling to methods, implementations, and caveats.

Numerics of Partial Differential Equations (VU3, 5 ECTS-AP, LV 198706)
Study the most important set of tools for describing reality in terms of mathematical models suitable for computation.

Software Solutions in HPC (VU2, 3 ECTS-AP, LV 198714)
A look over the edge: How to solve problems in theoretical chemistry and molecular dynamics, and a teaser on machine learning.

C and C++ in Simulation Development (VU3, 5 ECTS-AP, LV 198705)
Learn how to code to solve (numerical) problems correctly, quickly, and efficiently.

HPC Implementation B: Accelerators (VU3, 5 ECTS-AP, LV 198710)
Special problems call for special hardware. Learn how to get the most out of that hardware.

Please start at the EPSC landing page to get a quick overview. All details can be found in the according Studying at the University of Innsbruck and in case of doubt also in the EPSC curriculum (German only) itself.

Extension programmes at the University of Innsbruck allow students and alumni of specific study programmes to profoundly expand their knowledge within the subject of an extension programme - typically with an effort of 30 to 60 ECTS in specialized lectures.

Lectures are open to all interested students (if capacity is limited, preference will be given to EPSC participants). If you don't have time to take the entire study programme, make a selection (please consider contacting the (associate) dean of studies of your main programme if creditability of courses is an issue).
