Bachelor Programme: International Business and Economics – Universität Innsbruck

Bachelor Programme

International Business and Economics

The Bachelor Programme in International Business and Economics caters to students that are not only interested in business administration and economics but also in other cultures and foreign languages.

The students study one semester at a renowned international partner university, where they practice and refine their foreign language knowledge and immerse themselves into a foreign culture.

The right degree for me?

  • appreciate international economic connections and market mechanisms
  • understand how businesses that cross international borders work
  • acquire skills to work in an international environment
  • foster an appreciation of other cultures
  • learn and strengthen foreign language skills

Study Programme

The three-year Bachelor Programme in International Business and Economics (IWW) is offered at the Faculty of Business and Management and the Faculty of Economics and Statistics.

The introductory and orientation phase gives first-year students an overview of the main contents of the International Business and Economics programme and of the further course of study. During the first phase, students are required to take the course examinations of the two compulsory modules VO Business and Management Concepts and VO Fundamentals of Economics. After the introductory and orientation phase modules have been completed, all further modules can be taken (given completion of the respective required qualifying modules).

The study programme focuses on international components of business and economics. It includes the compulsory modules International Economic Relations, International Management and International Law. Individual specializations in business administration and economics, some of which can be completed abroad, round off the programme.

Prospects for the future

"Versatility" is probably one of the most important benefits our graduates gain from our programme. Many of our former students have leading positions in companies, in public administration or in non-profit organizations. In addition, the programme  provides an excellent basis for a master's degree in an international context.

5+1 Economics Plus!

We offer the option of supplementing our Bachelor's Programme in Management and Economics with other subjects. According to the 5 + 1 principle, you can supplement five semesters of Management and Economics content with one semester from another subject area. You simply replace the Management/Economic elective modules (30 ECTS) with a predefined module catalogue from another discipline, for example Digital Science.

The minor Digital Science, which was launched in the 2019/20 academic year, provides students with the opportunity to acquire valuable skills for a digitalised society. Here, you will learn the basics of data analysis and management using information technologies. You will also gain insights into the world of programming and develop an understanding of how new technologies are transforming both the economy and society. This vast toolbox of skills will enable you  to stand out from the crowd and be well-equipped for the job market of the future.

Learn more on the website of the Digital Science Center (DiSC): Minor Digital Science

Other Minors to choose from

  • Sustainability
  • Society and Politics
  • Methods of Empirical Social Research
  • Media and Communication Science

These minors complement the business and economics content with exciting insights from other subjects. They will help you to position yourself in an interdisciplinary manner.

Elective module  “Practice”

In order to test and apply  the knowledge and skills you have acquired or to gain insight into the conditions of professional practice and to acquire qualifications relevant to your profession, you can complete an internship worth 14 ECTS credits, e.g.,  in public administration institutions, companies, in Chambers of Commerce and interest groups, as well as national and international organisations.

Is there an introductory event?

Yes, an introductory information event will take place at the end of September. Further information will be published on this website in advance.

Do I always have to achieve the 30 ECTS-AP per semester and what happens if I don't manage it?

How quickly you study is up to you. We make sure that you can achieve 30 ECTS-APs. However, we also know that many students work while they are studying and the pace of their studies therefore varies.

Can I schedule my studies flexibly so that I can also work on the side?

Since we offer several parallel courses in small groups in most modules, you have a certain flexibility in terms of time during your studies. In addition, the course times also vary between the winter and summer semesters.

I have studied somewhere else before. Can I use this somehow?

Yes, we look at all the academic achievements of other universities individually and decide whether credit can be given for these achievements. In this case, please contact the programme manager(see below).
