Getting Started in Your New City – Universität Innsbruck

Getting Started in Your New City

Housing

ÖH - Innsbruck

The Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) helps you find apartments, shared flats, and dorm rooms through its housing platform.

The Department for Student Housing also offers the ÖH-Heimkompass, a comprehensive listing of student residences in Innsbruck and more.

City of Innsbruck

When you move into a flat in Innsbruck for the first time, relocate within Austria, or establish a secondary residence, you must register your address with the authorities.

Choosing Innsbruck as your main residence comes with benefits: for example, you can apply for rent subsidies or a resident parking permit. If you plan ahead, you can also register for a municipal flat.

Registering your main residence also helps the city indirectly through financial equalisation payments, which support services that benefit students. These include investments in student housing, public transport, expansion of the cycle path network, as well as cultural and educational facilities. Additionally, it grants you the right to participate in local elections in Innsbruck, as EU citizens can vote in municipal council elections at their main residence.
