40-000 Types of Questions – Universität Innsbruck

40-000 Types of questions

Overview

A selection of different question types is available in OpenOlat. In the following table you can see an overview of all question types. A closed question type specifies the possible answers (multiple choice, single choice, etc.). An open-ended question type does not provide any answer options. For the open question types Essay, Upload file and Drawing the evaluation has to be done manually.

Important steps

You can find out how to create a question in the Question bank in HelpCard 40-010, where you will also learn how to create a test from the questions. You can find out how to integrate a test into a course in HelpCard 40-040.

Detailed description

Description: Single choice questions provide participants with at least one answer option, one of which can be selected.

Application: Single choice questions are so-called closed tasks, since the answer options are predetermined. This type of question is very well suited for testing factual knowledge. A major advantage is the automatic evaluation of the questions.

Description: As with the Single Choice question type, participants have at least one answer option available. Unlike Single Choice, multiple answer alternatives can be selected here. There is also the possibility that all of the answer alternatives are correct.

Application: Multiple Choice is also a closed question type, which can also be evaluated automatically. Multiple choice questions are often used to test factual knowledge, but depending on the type of question they can also be used to test application knowledge.

Description: Kprim questions are a variation of the multiple choice question type. Here there are four answer options per question, and for each of these answer options the participants have to decide whether it is correct or not.

Application: Kprim tasks are suitable for testing both factual knowledge and application knowledge. Krpim are very suitable if several answer options are equally important or if several answers belong to one solution.

Description: In this question type participants must match an element in a row to the corresponding element in a column. Please note that mobile devices have problems displaying drag and drop elements. The settings Single Choice and Multiple Choice are available. Single Choice allows participants to assign only one item per row, Multiple Choice allows multiple items to be assigned per row.

Application: Match is a question type that can be scored automatically. Match questions are mainly used to identify and understand relations between similar terms and concepts. A good understanding of the language is required on the part of the participants in order to be able to correctly assign the terms.

Description: Similar to the Match question type, Drag and drop requires given definitions, terms, statements, rules, scenarios, etc. to be assigned to one or more correct answer alternatives. Please note that mobile devices have problems displaying drag and drop elements. Participants use the mouse to place the item in the correct answer category. Participants can choose between the following alternatives:

  • Single Choice: A term is assigned to one category.
  • Multiple Choice: A term can be assigned to multiple categories.

Application: Drag and Drop is a question type that can be scored automatically. This question type is particularly useful when relations between similar terms and concepts need to be identified and understood.
Drag and drop can also be used to implement sequence tasks. This type of question is especially designed to map sequences, analyze processes or create hierarchies.

Description: The True/false question type is a variation of the Kprim question. The answer options are entered in the columns. For each answer option, participants must decide whether it is true or false. There is also the option to leave the answer unanswered.

Application: True/False questions are closed tasks, since the answer options are predetermined. This type of question is very well suited for testing factual knowledge. A major advantage is the automatic evaluation of the questions.

Description: The question type Gap text consists of a text in which numbers, partial words, whole words or parts of sentences are omitted and replaced by empty fields. The missing text components are either filled in freely by the participants or the parts to be used are given in unsorted order.

Application: Gap text questions check whether a text has been understood (e.g.: language comprehension) or how the vocabulary or grammar has been mastered. There is the possibility of an automatic evaluation, even if there are several answer options per gap.

Description: This question type behaves similarly to the Gap text question type. The difference is that the answers are numbers, and an exact specification (with decimal place) or a tolerance range may be required.

Application: This question type is mainly used for problems that need to be calculated, for example in computer science - certain queries about memory usage. There is also a possibility of automatic evaluation here.

Description: Similar to the Gap text, in this question type a text with gaps is written, whereby a selection of answer options are given as hottext, which can then be marked by the participants in the respective checkboxes.

Application: This type of question, like the Gap text, is well suited for testing the participants' language ability (understanding sentence structure, reproducing terms). Automatic evaluation is also possible.

Description: In a Hotspot question, an image is presented wherein participants must identify and select a specific area (spots).

Application: This type of question is very suitable for recognizing visual structures. A possible application is to check whether objects can be mentally rotated. The evaluation is done automatically.

Description: This question type allows students to arrange both text and image elements in a specific sequence. They have to drag and drop the elements into the correct order.

Application: These are closed tasks, as the answer options are predefined. Such a question is very well suited for logic questions, factual knowledge queries or visual assignment tasks.

Description: Teachers can use this question type to ask participants to formulate an answer freely in a field provided for this purpose. This type of question corresponds to the principle of open questions, where there is no predefined answer.

Application: This question type is very suitable to get a short and free text based answer, e.g. a question about the definition of a technical term. Since there are no predefined answers, the participants have to formulate their own answers. However, translations of short texts can also be queried very well using this question type. The evaluation must be done manually.

Description: This question type can be used if you want to include questions in your test that require an external program. So you can formulate the question, the participants have to implement it in an external program and finally upload the result file in OpenOlat. Up to 10 files can be uploaded.

Application: This question type has a very specific application and allows questions that need to be implemented with external software to be included in OpenOlat tests. The evaluation of this question type has to be done manually.

Description: Participatns will be able to manipulate a provided image using various drawing tools.

Application: The Drawing question type is ideal when specific sketches are to be quizzed. Drawing curves and marking certain areas can also be tested well with this question type. The evaluation is done manually.

Description: Participants can insert solutions in a gap using a drop-down menu.

Application: Ideal for e.g. checking whether sentence structure or grammar is understood correctly. The evaluation is done automatically.
