A SYNCRETIC DESIGN:
Piranesi and x-Modernity
By analysing Piranesi's work as an architect and designer (projects, objects, and the
Campus Martius) and its critical reception over the centuries, “a Syncretic Design:
Piranesi and the x-Modernity” aims to discuss the possibility of thinking of design as
a syncretic composition of differences. Through a study of Piranesi's architectural
work and how it has inspired architects over the centuries, this PhD aims to lay the
groundwork for a historical meta-narrative concerning a figurative and compositional
approach to design. A design made of an accumulation of differences, each discrete,
but combined into a whole where formal, conceptual and historical multiplicities
dialogue with each other.
