In the Minor Economics the basics of economics are taught. Thus the abstract term ‘economics’ will be comprehensible. The Minor Economics is designed for students of all Bachelor programmes at the University of Innsbruck - which offer the choice to take a Minor - to learn the basics of economics. As a graduate of the Minor Economics you will learn the methods and instruments of economics and will be made familiar with basic economic principles such as supply, demand, costs, benefits, economic sustainability, production, scarcity, efficiency, preferences and decision-making processes. Further topics such as inflation, recession, cartelisation, monetary policy, forms of competition, price discrimination or forms of goods are dealt with and evaluated using the models developed.
With a solid understanding of the concepts you have learnt, you will be able to actively participate in economic discussions and critically analyse economic studies. Furthermore, you will be able to analyse data in an economic context in order to improve your understanding of economic events and economic policy decisions. Graduates will be able to apply their economic knowledge to problems and interpret the results of analyses, taking into account limitations in context, and make use of their knowledge for writing reports.
The Minor Economics comprises a workload of 30 ECTS-AP. The minor consists of four modules, which are listed below. These modules can be completed in one semester or spread over several semesters. Each module comprises two courses - a lecture (VO) or a lecture exercise (VU) and a proseminar (PS) - whereby the PS covers the same contents as the VO or VU and deepens them by practical applications. In order to adapt the allocation of course places to the individual needs and preferences of students, coordination and administration is carried out manually. Do I have to register for the modules via the SoWi points registration system?
No. The SoWi points registration system (SoWi-Punkteanmeldung) is a system for allocating course places that is used in the Bachelor's Programme Management and Economics, among others. However, this system is not used for the Minor Economics . Registration for modules as part of the Minor is carried out by the associate Dean of Studies, Felix Holzmeister. Places are made available as required.
At which location at the University of Innsbruck do the courses take place?
All courses take place on the SoWi campus (Universitätsstraße 15, 6020 Innsbruck). Some lectures are streamed or recorded in addition to the face-to-face courses. For further information and details regarding the course modalities, please refer to the respective module or course description in the course catalogue.
Can I do the Minor Economics over several semesters?
Yes, the four modules can be spread over several semesters. The aim is to do the modules as flexibly as possible, depending on your individual situation. It is recommended that you complete one or two modules per semester in two to four consecutive semesters.
Can I take part in the Minor Economics in addition to one of the Bachelor Programmes in Economics?
No. The minor is aimed at students of all disciplines with the exception of programmes in the field of economics. You cannot take the minor if you are enrolled in one (or more) of the following programmes: Bachelor' Programme International Economics and Business Studies, Bachelor's Programme in Management and Economics, Bachelor's Programme Economy, Health and Sports Tourism, and the Diploma Programme in International Economics.
