EURO1k: a pan-european high-resolution, rapid-update NWP system - development, applications and data-assimilation

Lukas Umek

Numerical Weather Prediction, Meteomatics, St. Gallen, Switzerland

Renewable energy production is heavily controlled by meteorological conditions with near-surface wind speed and downward solar radiation playing critical roles. Due to the success of renewable energies, wind turbines and solar panels are increasingly placed in sites with complex terrain. However, current operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models often struggle to provide accurate forecasts in complex terrain due to limitations in spatial resolution. This leads to inaccurate predictions of power production, impacting the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy systems. To address this challenge, Meteomatics developed the EURO1k model, the first pan-European weather model with a 1 km horizontal grid spacing spatial, providing optimal forecasting for wind and solar power.

The EURO1k model offers up to 48-hour long forecasts in a rapid-update setup, producing a new forecast every hour. In addition to standard data sources such as automatic weather stations, radar data, satellite data, and radiosondes, the EURO1k model also incorporates data from a network of Meteodrones - small, unmanned aircraft systems developed by Meteomatics - which collect vertical atmospheric profiles up to 6000 m MSL in altitude. In this presentation the EURO1k model setup and development will be described, including the data assimilation strategy with a special focus on the assimilation of Meteodrone data into the EURO1k model.
