The Department for Translation Studies (INTRAWI) at the University of Innsbruck was established in 1945. We can look back on a long tradition of training professional language and communication experts and have trained many generations of successful translators and interpreters. However, we also look to the future, as the market has changed and so has the training we offer. At the Department of Translation Studies, our focus is on the interplay between teaching, research and practice—teaching is based on research findings, and current requirements and tools that are commonly used in practice are integrated into teaching. Despite the ubiquity of artificial intelligence, the volume of translation and interpreting jobs continues to rise. If you want quality, you need professional communicators who can help across language and comprehension barriers, because while artificial intelligence calculates statistically, we train the experts in understanding for tomorrow and beyond;  and have been for eighty years!

You can find more detailed information about our degree programs in the Studies section of this website. Under International relations you can find all you need to know about our international networks, mobility programs and internships. You will also find numerous experience reports there.

Our department has been a member of the CIUTI (Conférence internationale permanente d'instituts universitaires de traducteurs et interprètes) for over thirty years and is thus committed to the quality standards of this international association of training centres for translation and interpreting. The Department of Translation Studies is also a member of the European Commission's EMT network as we offer master's degree programmes in Specialized Translation and Translation Technology as well as Literary and Audiovisual Translation. Together with universities from twenty-three countries, we represent the highest quality of standards and the most current educational goals in the field of Translation Studies. Further information on our department’s EMT accreditation can be found under International networking.
