Call for applications for scholarships for scientific theses at the University of Innsbruck for the academic year 2023/24

Scholarships for scientific theses aim at supporting degree students writing theses at universities. Scholarships are intended to be used for diploma thesis, master's thesis and doctoral thesis that already been registered, but have not yet been completed. Austrian citizens, citizens from EEA states and stateless persons granted equal status are entitled to make an application.

Important: Scholarships for scientific theses aim at supporting individuals and not institutions (institutes, organisational units, etc.).

Applications must be submitted via the students’ platform LFU:online within the following period:

 

 
May 06th, 2024 - May 24th, 2024
   
and
September 16th, 2024 - October 04th, 2024
 

Students unable to apply via LFU:online can submit their application personally (Application form) at the College Service Center, Innrain 52a, Ágnes Heller Haus, second floor, room 02N040, A-6020 Innsbruck.
 

I. General requirements for scholarships for scientific theses:

  • Application by the student to write a thesis that has not yet been completed, including a description of this thesis, an overview of costs and a financing plan;
  • Submission of at least one expert opinion from a university teacher (as set out in § 94 Paragraph 2 of the Universities Act 2002) on the financing plan and the probability of the student succeeding in completing the thesis with an above-average grade based on the student’s proposals for the thesis and his/her academic performance so far;
  • Applicants must not exceed the maximum study period during which they are entitled to receive a scholarship for scientific theses (§ 18 StudFG). However, valid reasons justifying an extended period of study may be taken into consideration (§ 19 StudFG);
  • New regulation for the calculation of the regular study duration due to COVID-19 of 09.09.2020:

  •  Applicants must fulfil all general requirements (as a minimum requirement) in order to apply for a scholarship for scientific theses.

II. Specific requirements 

Faculty of Architecture:

  • Completion of the first diploma examination for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

The compulsory expertise must demonstrate the eligible, exceptional financial burden, the probable above-average grades for the work done and the additional value that will arise for the university. In particular, the embedment in research projects, projects funded by third parties and the like should be elaborated. Financial support by institutes, faculties or other university funds, third-party funds and/or other funds received in addition to the requested scholarship must be listed.

A documentation of previously designed projects or theoretical/scientific work resp. (portfolio) is to be added to the application. Upload – if possible – via LFU:online, alternatively per e-mail to fakultaetenservicestelle@uibk.ac.at. 

Faculty of Business and Management:

  • A grade point average not greater than 1.5 in the first diploma examination certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • A grade point average not greater than 1.5 in the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • A grade point average not greater than 1.5 in the second diploma examination certificate or in the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Educational Sciences:

  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Biology:

  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis.
    Proof of examination performances amounting to 60 ECTS-Credits in the master's programme must be presented – a grade point average of not greater than 1.40 is required. 
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.
    Outstanding achievements (for example, accepted scientific paper, presentation at scientific meeting) must be submitted.

Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy:

   Field of Chemistry:
  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.
   Field of Pharmacy:
  • Completion of the first diploma examination for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master thesis or
  • presentation of the third diploma examination certificate or the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their dissertation.

Faculty of Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences:

  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 as well as examination achievements to the extent of 50 ECTS-Credits in the master's programme with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis.
  • Submission of the master's certificate with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.
    Evidence of outstanding performance (e.g., accepted scientific paper, presentations at scientific conference) must 
    be submitted.

Faculty of Teacher Education:

  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate (with a grade point average not greater than 2.0) for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the master's certificate (with a grade point average not greater than 2.0) for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics:

  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Social and Political Sciences:

  • Completion of the first diploma examination for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Psychology and Sport Science:

  • Completion of the first diploma examination for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • presentation of the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Engineering Science:

  • Presentation of the bachelor's certificate and the confirmation of the registration for the master's thesis for students wishing to receive a scholarship for the master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Economics and Statistics:

  • A grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the bachelor's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Philosophy and History:

  • A grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the first diploma certificate and the following examinations in the second part of studies for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the bachelor's certificate and the following examinations of the master's programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate as well as in the following examinations of the doctoral programme or the PhD programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Language, Literature and Culture:

  • A grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the first diploma certificate and the following examinations in the second part of studies for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the bachelor's certificate and the following examinations of the master's programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate as well as in the following examinations of the doctoral programme or the PhD programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Catholic Theology:

  • Completion of the first diploma examination with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • presentation of the bachelor's certificate with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • presentation of the second diploma certificate or the master's certificate with a grade point average not greater than 2.0 for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.

Faculty of Law:

  • A grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the first diploma certificate and the following examinations in the second part of studies for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their diploma thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the bachelor's certificate and the following examinations of the master programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their master's thesis or
  • a grade point average not greater than 2.0 in the second diploma and the third diploma certificate or master's certificate as well as in the following examinations of the doctoral programme or PhD programme for students wishing to receive a scholarship for their doctoral thesis.
