Turbulence anisotropy in the atmospheric surface layer

Samuele Mosso

ACINN, University of Innsbruck, Austria

Turbulence anisotropy was recently used to extend the scaling of surface variances of Monin Obukhov Similarity Theory (MOST) beyond its original assumptions (Stiperski I. and Calaf M., 2023, PRL). First, we will see how turbulence anisotropy can be used to explain the scatter in the flux-gradient relations of MOST, uncovering some important feature of these relations. Then the typical shapes of the stress tensor in the surface layer over desert and glaciated terrain will be presented. In the last part of my talk, I will show the first attempts at understanding the physical processes that lead to turbulence anisotropy using interpretable machine learning techniques on data from both flat and complex terrain sites.
