Elective options in BA Sociology

Information on the elective module "Interdisciplinary Competences"

For this module, courses amounting to 10 ECTS-Credits can be freely selected from the Bachelor's programmes (for BA Sociology) or master's programmes (for MA Sociology) established at the University of Innsbruck. The courses do not have to be related to each other, nor do they have to be related to sociology. For example, you can combine one course from Biology and one from Philosophy.

You can find a list of the courses open for this module in the course catalogue, in the module "Interdisciplinary Competencies" and under "Interdisciplinary and additional courses". In general, you can also choose any other course from the university's BA or MA degree programmes with the consent of the course instructor. Please write a note to this effect in the comments field when registering for the course.

In order for the courses you have completed to be assigned to the "Interdisciplinary Competencies" module, you must have them recognised. The necessary forms and all further information can be found at here.

Information on "Individual specialisation"

For individual specialisation, modules can be freely selected from the Bachelor's (for BA Sociology) or master's (for MA Sociology) degree programmes offered at the University of Innsbruck. The total scope is 15 or 20 ECTS-Credits in the BA Sociology programme and 20 ECTS-Credits in the MA Sociology programme.

In order to achieve a "specialisation" within your degree programme, there should be a connection between the selected courses. This can be thematic or methodological. For example, to set a thematic focus in the area of educational inequality, you can combine courses on inequality and education. To set a methodological focus, you can combine courses in which methodological skills are taught in different subject areas alongside courses with an explicit methodological focus. The connection can, but does not have to, be expressed in the course or module names. The modules can be assigned to different degree programmes. The courses you have completed will be listed in the annex to your certificate so that you can prove your individual specialisation when applying for a job.

You can find a list of courses that are open for "Individual specialisation" in the course catalogue, in the "Interdisciplinary skills" module and under "Interdisciplinary and additional courses". In general, you can also choose any other module from the university's BA or MA degree programmes with the consent of the course instructor. Please write a note to this effect in the comments field when registering for the course.

In order for the courses you have completed to be assigned to the "Individual specialisation", you must have them recognised. The necessary forms and all other information can be found at here.

If you are unsure whether the thematic connection is sufficiently given, you can ask the study representative in advance (bernhard.weicht@uibk.ac.at). Please explain in your email where you see the thematic or methodological connection.

In exceptional cases, individual courses can be recognised instead of complete modules. It is not necessary to discuss this in advance with the study coordinator.
