We had the pleasure of hosting Sevval Kurt from Yeditepe University, Istanbul, in our group from 26 to 28 May 2025. Sevval is a research assistant at Yeditepe and visited us through the erasmus+ Staff Mobility Programme for a few days. She is also in the final stages of her master’s thesis which explores a highly topical area of research: the comparison of AI-generated vs. human-designed test items in language assessment.
Her MA study focuses specifically on multiple-choice reading comprehension questions and investigated the differences between items created by various generative artificial intelligence chatbots and those crafted by expert test developers. Needless to say, her findings made for stimulating discussions. During her stay, she also sat in on several classes at our Department for subject-specific Education and we had an interesting and fruitful exchange learning more about each other’s language teacher education programmes.
We wish Sevval continued success as she completes her MA and look forward to potential future collaboration in the evolving field of AI and language testing.
