Translation technology
Translation technology refers to any form of technology that supports or performs translation activities (translating/interpreting). Thus, translation technology differs from language technology, which also includes, for example, voice control of devices, recognition of spoken language, language synthesis, language analysis and much more. Translation technology comprises two areas:
- Computer-assisted translation, i.e. applications that translators and interpreters use in their work - these applications are referred to as CAT tools (computer assisted translation) or CAI tools (computer assisted interpreting).
- Machine translation and programming in the field of translation. Particular consideration is given to this second area in the specialization of master's degree courses in Specialist Translation and Translation Technology (see Studies) and in the research area of automation.
In the corresponding courses at our department, translation technology is applied practically with diverse objectives. Students work with a wide range of computer-assisted tools for translation and interpreting as well as with common language resources that are currently used in the translation industry, i.e. the future professional life of our students.
