Buddy Mentoring for 1st-year Students

To ease the start into the university career and help to succeed in your first semester, first-year Bachelor students are assigned (on a voluntary basis) a buddy, an older student who has already successfully navigated the the first year of the Bachelor program.  

First-year Bachelor students will receive an email to their university email address letting them know the dates for the welcoming and orientation meeting with the buddies. If you missed that initial opportunity and want to connect with the buddies, please contact the student representatives .

In addition, a mentor from among the professors will give you a perspective "from the other side" and be glad to answer questions about fields in atmospheric science and particular classes, about research at our department, etc. The first meeting with the mentor,  Ivana STIPERSKI  , will normally be after the first class of the Introduction to Atmospheric Science course - you will be notified by email.

How does the buddy program work?

It is maybe best explained by the buddies themselves! Here is what the 2022 buddies wrote (in German):

Am 2. Oktober hat das Buddy-Kennenlernen mit anschließender Wanderung auf die Arzler Alm stattgefunden. Seitdem besteht regelmäßiger Austausch mit den Erstsemestrigen. Einerseits an der Uni, regelmäßig vor oder nach deren "Einführung in die Atmosphärenwissnschaften"-Vorlesung am Mittwoch, wo wir alles mögliche an Tipps austauschen und auch privat klettern oder ins Kino gehen. Andererseits sind die Erstsemestrigen auch regelmäßig bei den Stammtischen der Stv dabei, wo sie sich auch von höheren Semestern Tipps holen können und sie als Gruppe allgemein noch weiter zusammenschweißen. Weiters sind alle Buddies und Erstsemestrigen in einer WhatsApp-Gruppe, da wird Allfälliges immer schnell von einem Buddy beantwortet und private Anfragen um Hilfe/Tipps sind mir und auch anderen auch zugekommen.
