Changing climate in complex terrain: How robust is our understanding?

Stefan Sobolowski

NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, Bergen, Norway

Advances in computational power, physical understanding, model complexity, statistical and ensemble-based methods have ushered in a new era of very high-resolution climate information. But persistent questions remain. While there are clear improvements there also remain persistent shortcomings and questions around reliability. These issues are particularly acute for regions with complex topography where observational networks may be limited and resolving sharp gradients remains a challenge for all but LES-scale models. This talk will discuss the current state of the art through the lens of research activity at the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research and how we have approached complicated issues related both to advancing scientific understanding and communicating robust climate information to society at large.
