Workshop: Language, Genders, and Sexualities in Art and Culture
Anna Tzini

registration: anna@annatee.co.uk
limited number of participants: 20

Abstract

This workshop is an introduction to the field of language and textuality in modern and contemporary art through the prism of genders and sexualities. How is language used and how does it denote gender positions and sexual citizenship? What tactics does language offer along the lines of expressive means and representation?
Participants (through artworks and exhibitions) will have the opportunity to gain the tools to critically analyse the role of genders and sexualities in the artworks themselves and their contextualised presence in the social. We will discuss the history of language art, lavender linguistics (the field that explores the language used by LGBTQ+ people and includes a number of slangs from around the world, many of them used in artworks as a code), and reflect on how the language used by the artist to define themselves and their sociocultural position informs the work itself.
The goal is understanding the social parameters that shape such creations and the need for identification (persecution, violence, lack of representation in media), insight into the mechanisms of action (appropriation, reclaiming, neologisms, semantic alteration), and the effects of them in the social (humour as a reformer of social justice, safety, community formation).
The workshop will conclude with an overview of the tactics language can offer in making and presenting artistic creations and an exercise that will employ similar tactics (creativity, humour, playfulness, DIT).
