master Romance Studies – Universität Innsbruck

master Romance Studies

Depending on your interests, the master's degree in Romance Studies offers a flexible study structure between a high degree of academic specialisation on the one hand and a broad focus on the other:

 • high specialisation: one Romance language (e.g. Italian) and a subject-specific specialisation (e.g. literary and cultural studies) OR
 • broad specialisation: one language of specialisation and, to a lesser extent, a second Romance language (e.g. French) and both academic disciplines (i.e. linguistics and literary and cultural studies)

The new MA in Romance Studies is networked with the other master's programmes of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, so that an elective package (such as German as a Foreign and Second Language, Film Studies, Comparative Literature) from another subject can be taken.

The master's degree programme in Romance Studies provides you with highly specialised, research-led knowledge in the chosen focus language, as well as a whole range of key qualifications that open up a wide range of professional fields: in addition to working in the academic field, the spectrum ranges from the media sector to adult education, from cultural management to the diplomatic service or the international private sector (see also § 2 para. 2 of the curriculum for the wide range of possibilities). The master's degree programme in Romance Studies lasts two years (4 semesters) and comprises 120 ECTS-Credits. The focus is on one of the Romance languages represented at the Institute (French, Italian, Spanish), which is studied as a specialisation language. In addition to this language-specific, differentiated disciplinary area, in which you will also write your MA thesis in the foreign language, you will attend courses from the cross-linguistic, all-Romance interdisciplinary area (for example on Romance world literatures, memoria cultures of Romania or on language, media and politics) as well as the elective area. In the latter, you can also opt for an elective package (see elective packages), which allows you to specialise and qualify according to your personal interests.
