Experimental Particle Physics
The Innsbruck High Energy Physics group is a member of the CERN ATLAS collaboration and participates in the ATLAS experiment, one of the two experiments which discovered the Higgs boson in 2012. Our group also runs part of the federated Austrian Tier-2, which contributes to the worldwide LHC computing grid (WLCG).
We are working on data analysis as well as on software aspects of the detector, like track reconstruction in the inner detector. Research concentrates on B-physics, i.e. the physics concerning decays of the beauty quark (for more specific information see this former FWF project home page: B-physics with the ATLAS detector).
For students we offer topics for bachelor, master and PhD theses. PhD candidates may even apply for a stipend of the Austrian doctoral student programme, which allows them to obtain their PhD in particle physics from the University of Innsbruck while working directly at CERN.
Concerning outreach we regularly organize a hands on workshop in particle physics (for schools) as well as excursions to the historic V. F. Hess laboratory for cosmic rays at the Hafelekar (for any group of interested people).
