Master’s Programme Comparative Literature
Would you like to analyse literature and understand its relationship to other arts and disciplines as well as its role in society?
The students of the Master’s Degree Programme in Comparative Literature learn to independently work with literary texts as well as text linguistics and theories in literary and cultural studies. Texts are considered in diverse contexts by connecting different literatures and including other forms of media and art (film dance, theatre, fine arts, etc.)

Graduates possess highly specialised knowledge in the fields mentioned in the qualification profile. They are able to apply their competences in these fields and at the interfaces to other disciplines by independently formulate and substantiate scientific arguments and to find innovative solutions to problems.
- Knowledge of the history and development of literary phenomena; knowledge of theories of text, literature, culture and media; ability to impart the knowledge acquired during the study programme.
- Skills in the field of reception, production, conveying and adapting texts in a wider sense, qualifying for open and critical analysis of literary processes and other artforms.
- Ability to a safe, creative and correct use of the language skills acquired in the study programme in a wide range of situations and with regard to a variety of subjects.
- Competence in terms of analysis and practical use with media.
- General knowledge in the fields of culture and humanities as well as the ability to popularize humanistic perspectives.
- Ability to communicate one’s own culture and to promote an understanding of other cultures and gender-specific differences; ability to judge future developments in culture and society; problem awareness for socially marginalised and disadvantaged areas.
- Competence in interdisciplinary work; competence in shaping organizational processes.
Scientific work in universities and non-university institutions:
- editorial departments; as authors of non-fiction books; journalistic and editorial activity in the print media sector, especially in learned journals and newspapers, but also on radio and TV; PR agencies; publishing in the field of fine arts and culture
- advisory functions in politics and economy; adult education; librarianship
- advisory functions for management and (cultural) politics; organisational and administrative tasks in public and private institutions and organisations (culture management); in the theatre sector (dramaturgy etc.)
