Proof of general university entrance qualification:
With the exception of § 64 par. 5 UG 2002, the general university entrance qualification for admission to a doctoral programme shall be demonstrated by the completion of a relevant diploma programme or master's programme or another relevant programme of at least the same level of higher education at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. To compensate for substantial subject-related differences, supplementary examinations may be prescribed, which must be taken by the end of the second semester of the doctoral degree programme.
The rectorate may determine which of these supplementary examinations are prerequisites for taking examinations provided for in the curriculum of the doctoral degree programme.

Research Seminar 5 ECTS-Credits Seminar for Doctoral Students 10 ECTS-Credits Doctoral Thesis Defense 5 ECTS-Credits | The dissertation is a piece of scientific work which – in contrast to a diploma or master’s thesis – serves to prove the student's ability to cope with scientific que stions in an independent way. The dissertation topic must relate directly to educational science specialist fields or demonstrate a close relation to the disciplinary remit of educational sciences. The student has to propose a team of supervisors, consisti ng of at least two people (dissertation committee), and to nominate one of them as main supervisor (holder of venia docendi) It is permissible to propose supervisors (with the exception of the main supervisor) from subject ‐ related fields. In justifiable exceptional cases it is possible for students to propose only one supervisor Prior to beginning the work, the student has to communicate the dissertation topic and names of the supervisors in writing to the Director of Studies. Topic and supervisors are considered as accepted, if the Director of Studies does not veto them by means of a decree within one month after the receipt of the proposal. |

The dissertation topic must relate directly to educational science specialist fields or demonstrate a close relation to the disciplinary remit of educational sciences. It is the responsibility of Ph.D. candidates to propose a team of supervisors (dissertation committee) comprising at least two persons, and to nominate one of these as the main supervisor. With the exception of the main supervisor, committee members may come from other and related disciplines. In justifiable and exceptional cases it is possible for Ph.D. candidates to propose a single supervisor. Before beginning work on the thesis project, Ph.D. candidates must submit written confirmation of the proposed supervisor/s to the University of Innsbruck Director of Studies. The thesis topic and the committee of supervisors are considered to have been accepted if the above‐named Director of Studies does not issue a formal rebuttal within one month following the receipt of the proposal. |

Qualification Profile and Skills
The Doctor of Philosophy Programme Educational Sciences is grouped among the humanities and cultural sciences. Graduates are able to conduct theoretical and empirical research in educational science. They contribute to the analysis and conception of problems in educational contexts, work on further developing issues and publish nationally and internationally. Furthermore, they acquire the qualifications to teach in the educational sciences and to act in other educational capacities in organisations and institutions. This includes, for example, leading teams, planning and analysing work processes and the ability to develop, conduct and evaluate educational measures and programmes.
The core competence of graduates is seen in authoring scientific work that meets the international standards of peer-reviewed publications, using the theories and methods of the field productively, organising scientific forums, discussing findings from special fields, speaking to academic audiences and interested laypeople, and in additional qualifications that promote the involvement in local, regional, national and international research networks.
Expected Learning Outcomes for the Doctorate
Graduates are qualified junior academics. They have mastered the methods applied in research in their area and are capable of critically discussing, analyzing, and further developing theories. Junior academics possess the competence to develop and conduct substantial research projects with scientific integrity, and they are qualified to reflect on these processes scientifically and theoretically. They are also aware of issues and questions in gender research.
Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities
The occupational fields of graduates of the doctoral degree programme include universities, research institutes, post-secondary educational institutions, research departments of private and public institutions, interest groups and NGOs, psychosocial facilities, and various areas within educational institutions, such as politics, media, representation and administration.
