Why do I have to take a Supplementary Exam in (Ancient) Greek?
For some programmes offered at the University of Innsbruck you have to prove your knowledge of Greek. Here you can see which programmes require this exam. Depending on your previous education, you have to pass the supplementary exam or equivalent.
Can I have the credits from the Supplementary Exam (Ancient Greek) accredited towards my studies?
No, because the Supplementary Exam is a prerequisite for studying.
Are there special courses in preparation for the Supplementary Exam (Ancient) Greek?
Unfortunately, there are currently no preparation courses at the Language Centre. However, we would be happy to inform you about suitable courses at other institutes.

For students of the University of Innsbruck the primary registration is free of charge if a supplementary exam is required. You can register online or directly at the course office.

How can I register in person at the course office?
Please bring a completed registration form with you. You can pay the exam fee in cash, with an ATM card or credit card.
If you have registered for the exam online, the 14-day right of withdrawal applies. If you wish to cancel the exam, please send us an email and/or the completed cancellation form enclosed with your registration confirmation.

What is the content of the exam?
The examination shall be based on an original Greek text (prose; 140-160 words) or a slightly modified version of an original text. You must translate this text into German using a bilingual dictionary. You will get a reference to the context from which the passage originates or a reference that allows for a thematical classification. The exam consists either of one text that is independent in terms of content or of two correspondingly shorter texts that are independent in terms of content but contain essential grammatical constructions.
Yes, you may use a Greek-German dictionary (e.g. Griechisch-deutsches Schul- und Handwörterbuch von Gemoll, Langenscheidts Großwörterbuch Altgriechisch-Deutsch). However, grammar and verb tables are not permitted.
The Supplementary Exam is a written examination. It lasts three hours (180 minutes).
How is the exam assessed and graded?
The assessment criterion for the Supplementary Exam is a grammatically correct translation which conveys the original meaning. Comprehensibility and closeness to the original text must be evident. The marking of the translation is based on an adapted version of the Austrian school leaving exam assessment rubric for Greek.
Points are firstly awarded according to pre-specified units of meaning. The answer key contains paraphrases that express the main concepts that must be included in the translation. Secondly, points are awarded for lexis, morphology, and syntax, which are marked according to a number of predetermined checkpoints.
Grading is based on a set grading rubric. A pass is awarded if at least 51 percent of the maximum number of points is achieved.
Grading rubric: 36-40 points: very good (1), 31-35 points: good (2), 26-30 points: satisfactory (3) 20-25 points: sufficient (4) 0-19 points: fail (5).
When and how do I get the exam results and the certificate?
As a student of the University of Innsbruck, you can retrieve and print your exam results directly via LFU:online about five working days after the examination. A verification of the knowledge of (Ancient) Greek is thus provided.
External participants and employees of the University of Innsbruck will receive the certificate in digital form by email.
Can I see the exam I have taken?
Yes, the examination documents are kept for six months at the Department of Classical Philology and Neo-Latin Studies (Innrain 52a, Ágnes-Heller-Haus). There you have the opportunity to inspect your documents during office opening hours (Mon -Thu, 09:00-12:00 am and 01:30-04:00 pm). All exam documents will be destroyed after six months.
What rules must be followed during the exam?
Please note that only exam documents, pens and a Greek-German dictionary may be placed on the desk during the examination. Dictionaries are checked for notes or cheat sheets. Jackets, bags, mobile phones etc. must be stowed under the seat. Translations/notes may only be made on the paper distributed and stamped by the examiner.

The Supplementary Exam Latin is aimed at all students who have not yet privided the proof of knowledge of Latin required for their studies. For law students, there is a separate Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students.
Who is the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students aimed at?
The Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students is aimed at law students. The contents of the exam are in accordance with the examination in Roman Private Law.
Can I take the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students even if I am not studying law?
Yes, this is possible. However, if you are studying another degree programme requiring Latin (e.g. bachelor's degree n English and American Studies, bachelor's degree in History, etc.) and you have not completed the Preparatory Course for the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students, we advise against taking the Supplementary Exam Latin für Law Students.
Yes. The successful completion of the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students is valid for all other studies requiring Latin (e.g. for the bachelor's degree in English and American Studies, bachelor's degree in History, etc.). Conversely, the successfully completed Supplementary Exam Latin also entitles to study law.

Supplementary Exam Latin: Examination Content, -Assessment, -Procedure and Certificate

What is the content of the exam?
The examination shall be based on an original Latin text (prose; 160-180 words) or a slightly modified version of an original text. You must translate this text into German using a bilingual dictionary. You will get a reference to the context from which the passage originates or a reference that allows for a thematical classification. The exam consists either of one text that is independent in terms of content or of two correspondingly shorter texts that are independent in terms of content but contain essential grammatical constructions such as Participium coniunctum, Ablativus absolutus, subjunctive in main and subordinate clauses, nd-construction, Accusativus cum Infinitivo, Nominativus cum Infinitivo amoung others.
Yes. You may use the following Latin-German dictionaries: Stowasser and Stowasser primus, Schülerduden Latin-German, Pons Latin-German dictionary, Langenscheidt Großes Schulwörterbuch Latin-German. It is allowed to use more than one of these dictionaries in the exam. Other dictionaries, grammar or verb tables are not allowed. Compact versions for the first or second reading (e.g. Stowasser Primus, Schülerduden Lateinisch-Deutsch) are only recommended in combination with a more detailed dictionary (e.g. Stowasser, Pons Lateinisch-Deutsch, Langenscheidt Großes Schulwörterbuch Lateinisch-Deutsch).

What is the content of the exam?
The exam consists of two parts:
In the first part, knowledge of Latin legal terminology is tested in the form of a vocabulary test. The basis for learning is a given list of Latin terms and phrases from the field of legal terminology. The use of a Latin-German dictionary is not permitted for this part of the examination.
In the second part, an (if necessary, adapted) original Latin text (100-120 words) from the field of legal specialist writing (especially "Institutions" by Gaius) must be translated into German. Prerequisites are basic knowledge of Latin syntax, the passive mastery of a basic Latin vocabulary to the extent that it is conveyed in standard Latin textbooks (e.g. Medias in res!, Latinum, Cursus Brevis), as well as practise in translating legal texts. The use of a Latin-German dictionary is permitted for the translation.
No dictionary is allowed for the first part of the exam (vocabulary test). For the second part of the exam (translation) you may use a Latin-German dictionary.

The assessment criterion for part 1 is the correct German rendering of Latin terms and phrases from the field of legal terminology. The assessment criterion for part 2 is a translation that is correct in terms of content and meaning. Text comprehension and proximity to the original text must be given. The marking of the translation is based on an adapted version of the Austrian school leaving exam assessment rubric for Latin.
The weighting of examination parts 1 and 2 is 30 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively. The maximum score achievable for the first part of the exam (vocabulary test) is 12 points, for the second part (translation) 28 points (11 points for meaningful units; 17 points for checkpoints). Grading is based on a set grading rubric. A pass is awarded if at least 51 percent of the maximum number (this corresponds to 20 of 40 total scores) of points is achieved.

Language Proficiency Test for semester abroad
Who are the Language Proficiency Tests designed for?
The Language Proficiency Tests are designed for Innsbruck University students who are doing a semester abroad (e.g. erasmus+, Joint Study) as part of their study programme and must provide proof of their level of a foreign language. Some partner universities require proof of foreign language proficiency.
What is a Language Proficiency Certificate?
This document certifies a certain proficiency level in a foreign language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students of the University of Innsbruck can gain a certificate by sitting an exam at the Language Centre. The Language Centre offers such exams in English, French and Spanish.
In which languages can I do a Language Proficiency Test?
At the Language Centre we offer tests in English, French and Spanish for the Language Proficiency Test.
What levels are there Language Proficiency Tests and Certificates for?
There are Language Proficiency Tests and Certificates for the level B2 in English and B1 in French and Spanish.

What type of exam is it? How long does the Language Proficiency Test take?
The examination consists of a written and an oral part. The two parts usually take place on the same day. The written exam consists of listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing. The oral exam assesses your speaking skills.
How do I find out when the oral test is taking place?
You will receive an email with the exact time of your oral exam after registration has ended.
The contents of the exam vary according to language and level. The Language Proficiency Test consists of four sections. The listening and reading comprehension sections test receptive language skills, and the writing and speaking sections test productive language skills.
Listening Comprehension
You will hear two audio files. The tasks include both open (e.g. writing key words) and closed questions (e.g. multiple choice or matching). The focus is on selective listening comprehension that means understanding details (e.g. understanding individual statements or specific information).
Reading Comprehension
You will receive two reading texts. The tasks include open (e.g. writing key words) as well as closed questions (e.g. multiple choice or matching). The reading comprehension section examines selective comprehension and detailed comprehension.
Writing
In the writing section, you must write a text in your own words following the requirements given in the prompt.
Speaking
The speaking section is in the form of a dialogue (not a monologue) between candidates. After a ten-minute preparation period, the candidates will then discuss the topic provided.
Yes, you may use a dictionary (digital dictionaries are not allowed). This applies to all exams: English B2, French B1, Spanish B1.
How is the test assessed and graded?
All four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) must be passed in order to pass the whole language proficiency test. In order to pass, you must get at least 60 per cent in each skill. If one skill is under 60 per cent, the entire exam must be repeated.
When and how do I get the test result and the Language Proficiency Certificate?
When possible, you will receive your result by the examiner directly after the oral examination. Nevertheless, you will receive your result and your language proficiency certificate by email no later than five working days after the examination date.

How often do IELTS exams take place at the Language Centre?
The Language Centre offers exam dates twice a year, ideally in May and November. You can find our IELTS exam dates here.
How do I register for the IELTS exams?
All applications will be processed by the British Council Austria. Registration is possible directly at the British Council Austria. You can find instructions on how to register here.
How long can I register for the exam?
The examination spaces will be assigned in order of registration. We therefore recommend that you register as soon as possible. The registration period ends two weeks before the exam date.

How can I prepare for the exams?
Unfortunately, the Language Centre does not offer special preparation courses. On the website of the British Council Austria you will find information on how to prepare for the IELTS exams.
The IELTS exams consist of a written and an oral part. The two parts usually take place on consecutive days. The skills Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are tested.
When and how do I get the test results and the certificate?
You can view your result online 13 days after the written exam date. The certificate will be sent to you by post on the same day. The evaluation is done on a scale from 0 (Did not attempt the test) to 9 (Expert user).
