Pre-Congress Markerless Motion Analysis Workshop – Universität Innsbruck

Pre-Congress Markerless Motion Analysis Workshop

First lessons learned for the assessment of balance, gait & change-of-direction maneuvers with markerless motion capture

Co-organized by Maurice Mohr and Steffen Willwacher

Target group: All Congress delegates interested in 3D motion analysis.

Participant limit: Max. 15 participants

Workshop description: It seems too good to be true: Research-grade 3D motion capture of your athlete, patient, or study participant without cumbersome preparation or time-consuming data post-processing? Full assessment of a knee joint moment during jumping in less than 5 minutes? The use of AI-based markerless motion analysis is appealing and its application is growing rapidly in the fields of sports and health.

While markerless motion analysis holds tremendous potential and may help us tackle new and exciting questions in research and practice, we need to learn about when and how the technology is most applicable and about its weaknesses and pitfalls.

Research groups at the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (Prof. Willwacher and team) and at the University of Innsbruck (Ass. Prof. Mohr and team) have completed first experiments and validation studies using markerless motion analysis technology, specifically Theia3D software. In this workshop, they will provide insights into the first lessons learned when tracking balance, gait, and change-of-direction maneuvers with markerless motion analysis. The initial presentation will cover 1) the basic concept behind markerless motion analysis, 2) comparisons with traditional marker-based optical motion capture for a variety of movements, and 3) use-cases for selected research questions.  The workshop will include demos of a markerless motion analysis session and allow participants to try and track different movements of interest. The workshop is aimed at both experts and non-experts in 3D motion analysis and all interested are invited to sign up.
