Introductory Course on Ultracold Quantum Gases
Innsbruck, 11-13 July 2017
including a colloquium of the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB “Foundations and Applications of Quantum Science (FoQuS)”
Organizers:
Rudolf Grimm (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck; IQOQI Innsbruck)
Hanns-Christoph Nägerl (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck)
Administrative Assistent:
Sabine Hofer sp-physik@uibk.ac.at
Scope of the Course
The short course from 11–13 July 2017 will give an introduction into the fascinating research field of cold atoms and ultracold quantum gases, which offers many exciting opportunities for young researchers. The course is addressed to students early in their master’s program and is also suitable for students just finishing their bachelor’s degree and first-year PhD students who have recently joined the field. Specialized knowledge in the field is not required; students should have a basic knowledge of quantum physics and atomic, molecular, and optical physics at the undergraduate level.
Program
Thirteen lectures given by experts from Innsbruck, Vienna and Trento (Italy) will cover the basic concepts of laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultracold Fermi gases, ultracold molecules, strongly correlated quantum gases, and optical lattices. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit state-of-the-art laboratories at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI).
The school will start on the evening of Monday, 10 July with registration and a get-together. The lectures will conclude at midday on 13 July.
In the afternoon of 13 July, participants in the course are invited to attend a colloquium where overviews of current research in the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB will be presented. The program of the intensive course ends with a joint social event in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains (barbecue at Arzler Alm) in the evening of Thursday, 13 July. Students will depart Innsbruck on 14 July and are also welcome to attend the more specialized SFB colloquium talks on the morning of Friday, 14 July.
Confirmed speakers of the Summer School:
- Mikhail Baranov (IQOQI Innsbruck)
- Lauriane Chomaz (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck)
- Gabriele Ferrari (BEC Center, University of Trento)
- Stefano Giorgini (BEC Center, University of Trento)
- Rudolf Grimm (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck; IQOQI Innsbruck)
- Andreas Läuchli (Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck)
- Manfred Mark (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck)
- Hanns-Christoph Nägerl (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck)
- Thomas Schweigler (Institute of Atomic and Subatomics Physics, Vienna University of Technology)
- Andrey Turlapov (Nizhny Novgorod State University)
Participants
In addition to students from the three member universities of the SFB (University o Innsbruck, University of Vienna, and Vienna University of Technology), we invite external students to participate. We will be able to sponsor the participation of about 30 external students, covering travel costs of up to maximum 200 euros per participant as well as accommodation, including breakfast.
