Life
Robert Weidner studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg, where he graduated in 2010. He then worked as a research assistant and, since 2014, as junior research group leader of the interdisciplinary junior research group smartASSIST (project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and as group leader of Robotics and Automation at the Laboratory for Production Engineering (Professor Wulfsberg) at Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. Since August 2018, he has been Head of the Chair of Production Technologies at the University of Innsbruck. In addition, R. Weidner was honoured as Academic Young Scientist 2017 and winner of the BMBF Young Scientist Competition "Interdisciplinary Competence Development", founding member and one of the speakers of the Young Forum: Engineering Sciences (JF: TEC). He is also managing partner of the Helmut Schmidt University spin-off exoIQ.
Research
The Chair of Production Technology at the Institute of Mechatronics is involved in research in the field of future workplaces. We work on projects for basic research as well as for the development of industrial applications. The focus of Robert Weidner's research activities in recent years as well as the focus of the chair - but not exclusively - is on research into technical systems for physical support during physically demanding activities (body support systems/exoskeletons) for various application contexts in professional and everyday life, e.g. industry, logistics and care. In addition to basic and application-orientated technologies, such as support systems for tasks at head level or above and the handling of loads, the Chair of Production Technology develops new concepts for human-machine interaction as well as methods for the design and evaluation of wearable systems.

After graduating from Reithmanngymnasium Innsbruck in 2014, Samet Ersoysal began his bachelor's degree in mechatronics at the University of Innsbruck in cooperation with UMIT in Hall. As part of his bachelor's thesis, he focussed on the development and construction of haptic feedback for a touch display. Mr. Ersoysal completed his Bachelor's degree in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science. Immediately afterwards, he began his Master's degree in Mechatronics at the University of Innsbruck and chose Industrial Mechatronics and Materials Science as his specialisation. In addition to his studies, he worked and researched at the Chair of Production Technology at the University of Innsbruck as a student assistant between 2019 and 2022 and developed a passive and actively controlled elbow support system for the working world during his master's thesis. Mr. Ersoysal completed his master's degree in 2022 with a degree in engineering and then began his PhD studies in technical sciences at the University of Innsbruck at the Institute of Mechatronics/Chair of Production Technology. His research focuses on the development of adaptive interfaces for industrial exoskeletons.

Life and research
After graduating from high school, Katharina Schmermbeck studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Through the Erasmus+ exchange programme, she completed part of her bachelor's degree in Perugia, Italy, and gained her first insights into teaching and research at the university as a student assistant. Her Master's degree in 'Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence' at the Technical University of Munich covered topics in robotics and machine learning, while her personal focus was on wearable robotics and prosthetics. During her master's thesis at the Biorobtics Laboratory of the École Politechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Ms. Schmermbeck developed a robotic hand exoskeleton for the rehabilitation and assistance of stroke patients. Building on her practical and theoretical knowledge, she will support the Chair of Production Technology as a university assistant in the doctoral programme in Technical Sciences.
