Summary
With the goal of "climate neutrality by 2040", Austria is making an ambitious and urgently needed contribution to the implementation of the Paris Agreement of 2015. Smaller cities are currently criticized for not supporting the necessary measures to the required extent. The market town of St. Johann would like to set an example here and, together with the project partners University of Innsbruck (Energy Efficient Building) and Regio-Tech, draw up a climate roadmap with feasible and financially viable measures, taking into account the good local PV potential, the existing district heating network of the local heating system with a high proportion of waste heat and biomass, and the renovation potential of public and private buildings.
The innovative character of the present application consists in the use of districtPH, a newly developed but already validated tool in the EU project Sinfonia, in which the data input effort is decisively reduced using a cohort model. This makes it possible to carry out a climate roadmap considering different variants in the given framework. The recent installation of energy meters in municipal buildings enables comprehensive monitoring to determine the current baseline. Together with the preliminary work in the form of an energy space plan, these form a solid starting point in the decision-making and planning phase, which, using the districtPH variant simulations, should contribute to deriving a concrete and scientifically based catalogue of measures for the market town of St. Johann. The comprehensive solution approaches will include renovation measures in the EnerPHit standard, if possible, with extensive serial prefabrication, the integration of renewable energies, the expansion of the existing district heating network and the electrification of mobility at the community level.
These measures are intended to secure the path towards climate neutrality for the market town of St. Johann by 2040. The implementation of these measures will ensure planning and supply security for the citizens and enable an early assessment of alternative strategies, e.g., the installation of heat pumps, if a development with a district heating network is not possible.
Project goals
The Energy Efficient Construction work area will play a key role in developing the timetable. This work also includes the simulation of variants and the development and definition of fallback scenarios that are to be used in the event of unforeseeable discontinuation of planned measures. Furthermore, a renovation concept is to be developed for at least one municipally owned property, including possible PV integration. In addition to districtPH, which is already a validated tool for variant simulation, the experience of UIBK-EEB in the areas of renovation, building physics and building services engineering will be used to implement these goals.
Funding
This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund and is carried out within the framework of the programme " Leuchttürme für resiliente Städte 2040, Ausschreibung 2022“.
