Academic AI – Universität Innsbruck

Academic AI

With the introduction of Academic AI, the University of Innsbruck is expanding its repertoire of digital tools. Learn how to responsibly use artificial intelligence and find out how you can use it in your daily work at the University of Innsbruck on this website. To develop your skills, we have created extensive training programs and spaces for sharing experiences.

Universität Innsbruck und AI

Overview

With Academic AI, the University of Innsbruck offers its members the opportunity to raise their awareness of data processing and the limits and potential of artificial intelligence. The following modules are currently available for use:

Document Analyzer

You can have uploaded documents analyzed via Academic AI.

General Chatbot

You can also simply chat with one of the available speech-generating models.

AI Lab

You can have Academic AI take on various roles in the AI lab.

Tailored AI

You can use this module to create a customized AI knowledge database

Once in the system, you are allocated €20 for tokens, which are replenished monthly. You can spend these at your own discretion. But which input costs how much? Unfortunately, this is not clear at first glance. You are charged per token, with each model charging differently for processing, as either more (GPT 4o) or less (GPT 4o Mini) information has to be processed.

What are tokens? A token is the smallest unit of data processed by an AI.

Uploading a document and having it analyzed consumes more tokens than processing a voice input that you have typed yourself.

Using GPT 4o to process a voice input consumes more tokens than using GPT 4o Mini.

Instructions

Would you like to enrich your teaching with the help of AI - use it to support planning and idea generation or simply try out AI tools for yourself?

Academic AI is open to all members of the University of Innsbruck. Log in under the following link:

20€ is available to you per month for the use of tokens. What are tokens? A token is the smallest unit of data processed by an AI. In the case of a speech-generating AI, for example, OpenAI provides a calculator to make token usage accessible: https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer

You will find the following modules in the main menu:

Document Analysis

"Understand and analyse documents with the help of AI": If you click on this module, you can upload documents (all common formats: PDF, Word...) in the window that opens and use questions to explore and analyse their content (or have it analysed).

General chatbot

"Chat with the latest models from OpenAI such as GPT-4": If you select this module, you will have access to a language-generating AI model with which you can interact in natural language.

In both modules, you can see the available credit that you can spend on requests in the top right-hand corner. Both modules consume different amounts of tokens depending on the size of your requests and the documents you upload, as well as the language model (GPT 3.5 Turbo, GPT 4o or GPT 4 Turbo) you select.

Left side menu:

In the FAQ at the bottom left of the side menu you will find frequently asked questions. Click on Modules on the left of the side menu to return to the main menu.

Under Dark or Light you can change the page view.

By clicking on German or English , you can switch between the preset languages.

To log out, click on Log out at the bottom left of the side menu.

Document Analyzer

"Understanding and analysing documents with the help of AI": Here you can upload documents (all common formats: PDF, Word...) and use questions to explore and analyse their content.

Click on Modules in the side menu on the left to return to the main menu.

General ChatBot

"Chat with the latest models from OpenAI such as GPT-4": Here you have a speech-generating AI model at your disposal with which you can interact in natural language.

You can choose one of the following models by clicking on the cogwheel icon at the top right: GPT 3.5 Turbo, GPT 4o and GPT 4 Turbo.

Click on Modules on the left in the side menu to return to the main menu.

KI-Labor

“Discover the potential of AI with intuitive experimentation tools.”: You can assign a role to the chatbot here using a so-called system prompt.

The standard templates are the options “Shakespeare Writing Assistant”, “Motivational Coach” and “Technical Troubleshooter”. You can also create your own templates and thus create your own scenarios. For example, you can let the system take on the role of a student or researcher and influence the results achieved accordingly.

Click on Modules in the side menu on the left to return to the main menu.

Tailored AI

You can use this module to create a customized AI knowledge base. The AI responds based on (up to 50) documents that you have previously uploaded to the platform. Once created, you can click on the three-dot menu at the top right of the Tailored AI title to change and customize it again and again.

1. Click on Tailored AI on the left-hand side of the window

2. Click on + Create a new Tailored AI. Click on Create your Tailored AI in the middle of the window to start the creation process.

3. Give your Tailored AI a name and write a short summary of its functionality (max. 100 characters). Click Next to continue the creation process.

4. In steps 2, 3 and 4, you can optionally change the (display) color and the icon in the title of your Tailored AI, define a welcome message and a conversation starter for users and add documents to the knowledge base. Please be patient: At this point the system needs a little bit of time to upload the documents. Click onto X in the upper right-hand corner to close the document window and click onto Save to upload the documents that you selected. The system will upload these now. If you do not want to do this yet, click Skip. Once you have done this, click Next to continue the creation process.

5. In step 5 / 5 you add instructions to control the responses of your Tailored AI. You can choose from three ready-made templates (General Purpose Assistant, Knowledge Base Assistant and Hybrid Assistant) or create your own Tailored AI by clicking on the Custom template. Click Next to complete the creation process.

6. Optionally, you can invite other users to use your Tailored AI in the last step. Attention! Anyone who has access to your Tailored AI can view and download your (uploaded) data!

You can always edit a Tailored AI once you have created it by clicking onto the three-dot-menu in the upper right-hand corner of the Tailored AI module.
