Archaeological Museum Innsbruck
Collection of casts and originals of the University of Innsbruck
The Archaeological Museum Innsbruck - Collection of casts and originals of the University of Innsbruck, founded in 1869, is the largest collection of classical antiquities in western Austria with its combination of casts, copies and originals, now numbering over 1,400 objects, and with this focus occupies a special position within the Tyrolean museum landscape. The museum offers an almost complete overview of the development of Greek and Roman art and cultural history.
Since the 1920s, part of the collection has been housed in the main university building on the Innrain, which is a listed building. The museum's ongoing lack of space was finally resolved in March 2008 with the relocation of the university's archaeological and classical studies institutes to the ATRIUM Center for Ancient Cultures at Langer Weg. The contrast between the ancient objects and the modern, open architecture created a unique appeal in the exhibition.
The site was closed in 2023 and the centre was moved to the newly built Ágnes-Heller-haus on Innrain. Due to construction defects that have not yet been rectified and ongoing damage in the new museum premises, it is unfortunately not yet possible to permanently display the exhibits there and thus operate the museum on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to predict when the museum can be used there.
This means that only the collection in the main university building (old building) at Innrain 52, where the majority of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures are on display, can be visited at the moment. Other ancient large sculptures, casts of reliefs and artefacts from the Roman provinces with a focus on Roman Austria, the collection of Greek and Roman portraits and the collection of Latin inscriptions, the extensive collection of small sculptures, replicas of ancient ceramics and glassware, as well as all exhibits from the prehistory and early history of Tyrol and the entire original collection are only accessible to a limited extent until further notice.
In recent years, the collection has been visited by several thousand visitors as part of guided tours, major events and educational programmes for children and young people, thus fulfilling its function as a link between the university and the public.
The collection can be visited by appointment.
