Programme

The Winter School will be five days long, starting on Monday, 9 December at 14:00 and ending on Friday, 13 December at 12:30. Apart from the opening and closing days, the activities will run 9:00 – 21:00 each day, but with generous time slots in between for participants to enjoy the surrounding attractions (approximately 5-6 workshop hours per day). The programme will comprise a mixture of lectures (with discussion) and practical workshops. For the workshops, participants will be split into two groups. This format proved successful in the 2018 EALTA Winter School and allows for a larger number of participants to be accepted while ensuring they receive the maximum attention possible in a smaller workshop atmosphere. 

The course will cover the following topic areas:
 

• The construct in task-based language assessments
• Authenticity of tasks in language assessments
• Integrated/multimodal tasks
• Tasks for different purposes and audiences
• Designing localized task-based tests
• Task-based (can-do based) self-assessments, on paper or online
• Rubrics for tasks (customised, local, goal-oriented)
• Online resources: task-banks as a resource to create assessments

Target Audience

The target audience is graduate students, pre- and in-service language teachers and teacher trainers, test developers and researchers, school program planners and other interested stakeholders involved in matters related to TBLT and language assessment. An international audience is welcome and encouraged. Up to 40 participants can be accommodated.

Application

The course will not require long experience or specialized knowledge in language testing and assessment and/or TBLT. A short questionnaire will be included in the application form to gather information about participants’ interests and needs. This will enable the teaching team to tailor the course to the needs of the participants. The detailed programme and timetable will be finalised and sent to participants at least one month before the start of the workshop.
