I am carrying out ecological research in mountain environments on various temporal and spatial scales ranging from ecosystem to landscape level with a special focus on global change, functional biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem services and sustainable development.

Over the last several years, the main focus of my research has been the analysis of the ecological effects of land-use changes in mountain regions. I have combined process studies at the ecosystem level on ecological key questions, such as biodiversity, energy, water, carbon and nutrient budgets, with a landscape-ecological approach. My more recent works assess combined effects of changes in land-use and climate and their impacts on ecosystem services.
