CliMap-R

CliMap-R combines quasi-physically based remapping algorithms that have proven robust in a variety of previous studies in combination with ordinary direct interpolation techniques to topographically correct coarsely resolved hourly meteorological data for the variables temperature, precipitation, air humidity, short- and longwave radia- tion, surface pressure as well as wind speed.

CliMap-R includes the following functionality

  • Calculation of potential shortwave radiation accounting for topographic effects (e.g., terrain slope and orographic shadowing) (Corripio 2003)
  • Cloud cover and actual shortwave radiation estimation (Liston and Elder, 2006)
  • Altitudinal corrections for temperature, humidity and precipitation based on monthly correction functions (Liston and Elder, 2006; Marke, 2008)
  • Topography-based wind model for the correction of wind speed and direction (Liston and Elder, 2006)
  • Correction of systematic biases in precipitation observations based on temperature and wind speed (Kochendorfer et al., 2017)
  • Precipitation phase detection based on wet-bulb temperature
  • Consideration of wind-effects on snow transport and preferential deposition (Hanzer et al., 2016)
  • Topographic correction of longwave radiation and surface pressure (Maykut and Church, 1973; Corripio, 2003)

Output of CliMap-R can be used as input for hydrological simulations or climate studies. As plots for the model domain and selected output locations are exported by default, the remapping tool is particularly suited to be applied in an educational context. The model is developed in the R scripting language and will be publicly available in form of an R-package shortly.
