India has been part of a ‘paradigm shift’ since the 1990s. It caused a rollback of the state and market forces, regarding the increasing significance of globalisation and the preference to economics over politics. At the same time, there is a rainbow of political mobilisations over the Indian horizon with interesting similarities with the European Union, such as the women’s movement, mobilisations and identity politics by caste system victims, environmental movements, human rights groups, anti-corruption initiatives and LGBT-activism. The Indian state and elite are responding to these mobilisations in a differential manner including co-option, repression and benign neglect. What is the result so far?

Anand Kumar has been active in public life for the last forty years, fighting for the cause of socio-political reforms and against corruption in India. He was founding member and national spokesperson of ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ and presides the newly established national platform of alternative politics ‘Swaraj Abhiyan’. He has been professor of sociology at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University and President of the ‘Indian Sociological Society’.
