Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:

  1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
  2. Introduction to Philosophy, SL 2, 5 ECTS-Credits

(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.

General Information

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 8 semesters or 240 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Secondary School Teacher Training Programme in Ethics have acquired the subject-specific, didactic, pedagogical and practical teaching qualifications and competences that enable them to competently teach pupils in the subject of ethics and to raise their interest in theories and problems of philosophical ethics, to encourage them to think critically and to strengthen their judgment skills.

The graduates

  • have an in-depth knowledge in all key areas of philosophical ethics and are able to prepare this specialist knowledge in a differentiated manner suitable for pupils.
  • know different methods of reflecting on ethical problems and how they can be put into practice for teaching,
  • can apply ethical theories to situations and problems in the lifeworld as well as make well-founded judgments about moral problems within the framework of these theories,
  • can connect problem areas from a wide variety of other subject areas relevant to ethics and discuss them from a common point of view,
  • know the goals and controversies of philosophy and ethics didactics and can assign the different didactic models to them.
  • are convinced of the necessity of independent knowledge acquisition in the sense of lifelong learning and are able to incorporate new results of specialist research and didactic research into their own teaching and thereby develop them further.

Expected Learning Outcomes

The graduates have in-depth knowledge of the philosophical ethics relevant to secondary schools as well as the areas of didactics of ethics and school pedagogy. They have mastered the methods of scientific work. They know curricula and textbooks, can reflect on them critically and plan their lessons in a professional and competence-oriented way. They are able to promote personal development processes, accompany learning processes and assess their learning outcomes.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Programme and can provisionally start their teaching service in the chosen general education subject in secondary schools to complete the Induction and Orientation Phases.
With the qualifications acquired during the Bachelor’s Programme further job opportunities, such as social and youth work or adult education, open up.

Examination regulations
