Evaluation of heatwave mitigation and adaptation strategies in the Grenoble valley

Charles Chemel

National Centre for Atmospheric Science, Leeds, United Kingdom

The city of Grenoble is nestled in an alpine valley that can be conducive to extreme temperatures during severe heatwaves. This seminar will report on the analysis of numerical model results of temperature distribution in the atmosphere of the valley during heatwaves representative of current and future climate conditions. Results for a past heatwave show that a detailed description of the urban canopy is required for the numerical model to capture the observed variability of the urban heat island in the valley. Results for a future heatwave indicate that practical heatwave mitigation strategies (e.g., use of available space to increase green areas or increased albedo of the roofs of buildings) result in reductions of temperature of variable magnitude across the city. Implications for urban planning and heatwave mitigation and adaptation strategies in the valley will be discussed.
