Information on the new curriculum for the Bachelor's degree programme in Educational Science (2023W)
From 1 October 2023, a new curriculum will come into force for the Bachelor's degree programme in Educational Science (subject to approval). The following information is also subject to approval and may still be adjusted if necessary!
For all those who have started the Bachelor's programme at the University of Innsbruck before 1 October 2023, there are two possibilities:
- You can complete your studies until 30.09.2027 in the curriculum (in which you started) that has been valid since 2012 (last amended in 2016).
- You can also voluntarily submit to the new curriculum. Transfer to the new curriculum is possible during the enrolment period.
You have the right to complete all courses according to the 2012/16 curriculum. The overview shows how the courses are planned to be offered in the coming academic years. If a course is no longer offered, it will still be possible - as long as the 2012/16 curriculum is in force - to take an examination on the material of the last course offered. For reasons of examination organisation, however, it is strongly recommended to take the examinations close to the time when the course was last offered.
1.1 Can students in the 2012/16 curriculum complete courses (+examinations) according to the 2023 curriculum?
- In principle, the courses should be completed according to the curriculum 2012/16 and the courses offered within the framework of this curriculum.
- If courses according to the 2012/16 curriculum are no longer offered, it is possible to attend courses of the new curriculum. In this case, it is essential to observe the equivalence list so that you do not take courses twice or then miss courses before the Bachelor's degree.
- As a rule, examination credits are assigned on the basis of the equivalence list without an application procedure. You can make the assignment yourself in LFU:online.
- The curriculum according to which the course is being studied applies as a registration requirement and as a criterion for the allocation of places in courses with a limited number of participants.
2.1 What should be considered when switching to the new curriculum?
In general, the change from curriculum 2012/16 to curriculum 2023 is only recommended under very specific conditions, e.g. if only a few courses have been completed according to curriculum 2012/16.
If you are at an advanced stage of your studies (from the 4th semester onwards) and have largely completed the courses according to the recommended course of study, a change to the new curriculum is not recommended. The range of courses offered differs more and more as the course of study progresses (e.g. internships, more seminars, etc.), a late change usually means additional work.
However, the decision about a change and the weighing of the associated advantages and disadvantages can only be made by you individually.
We would like to give you the following to consider:
- The courses of the new curriculum will not all be offered at the beginning of the winter semester 2023/24, but will be continuously supplemented. This will primarily be done according to the recommended course of study for students who regularly start with the new curriculum on 1 October 2023.
- Courses that are not yet offered according to the new curriculum must be completed on the basis of the equivalence list from the courses offered in the 2012/16 curriculum.
In order to check which courses still have to be completed when transferring to the new curriculum and whether the transfer is worthwhile, there is some help here. It is best to have your transcript of records or examination record at hand to start the comparison.

2.2 Do negatively assessed examinations lapse when transferring to the new curriculum?
- The repetition of examinations should take place according to the curriculum in which the first attempt took place. The repetition in the "old" curriculum ensures that the scope and content of the examination remain approximately the same. Attention: Even if the titles of the courses are similar in both curricula, the learning objectives and contents may have changed!
- Examinations are forfeited if the examinations are taken according to the modalities of the new curriculum and these differ from the modalities of the old curriculum. This is the case if the number of ECTS has changed or if a VO from the old curriculum is set equivalent to a SE in the new curriculum.
Example for clarification
Case 1: If, for example, the examination for the course "VO Einführung in Disability Studies" has already been graded negatively twice, then it will be repeated according to the old curriculum and the examinations will continue to count.
Case 2: If, for example, the exam for the course "VO Grundfragen erziehungswissenschaftlicher Geschlechterforschung" (VO Basic Questions in Gender Studies in Educational Science) has to be repeated, the passed attempts only count if the exam is taken according to the old curriculum. If the course has been changed to the new curriculum in the meantime, the examinations count again because the ECTS credits for the course change significantly (old: 3.5 ECTS credits, new: 5 ECTS credits).
Case 3: If the course "VO Geschichte, Konzepte und Begriffe kritischer Geschlechterforschung" (VO History, Concepts and Concepts of Critical Gender Studies) has to be repeated and a change to the new curriculum has taken place, the completed entries do not count when changing. In the new curriculum, a seminar is offered instead of the lecture, so the examination modalities change fundamentally: In contrast to the lecture, no course examination is taken in the seminar, but it is an examination-immanent course. The examination format is therefore no longer the same.
Attention: The courses of a module are only offered in the winter semester if it is entered in a winter semester in the following chart, or only in the summer semester if the module is entered in a summer semester block!
In the next three academic years, teaching will be planned in parallel with the "old" (2012/16) and the new curriculum. In principle, the courses in the old curriculum will decrease and be expanded step by step in the new one.
Here is a preliminary overview of the planning for the coming academic years.
4.1 What about the reduction of courses in the old curriculum?
Courses from the old curriculum that have not yet been attended according to the recommended study plan will still be offered. In addition, there is a transition period for selected courses that no longer appear in the new curriculum in this or a similar form.
All courses that are no longer offered in the old curriculum have equivalents in the new curriculum and will be offered in the coming academic year. If you still need a course according to the old curriculum, the equivalent course can be completed in the new curriculum.
The Table should provide an overview of this.
4.2 What is the structure of the courses in the new curriculum?
In the academic year 2023/24, the courses of the first academic year will be offered from the new curriculum according to the recommended course, as well as the first courses of the second academic year for the students of the old curriculum who have switched.
The following modules of the new curriculum will therefore be offered in the academic year 2023/24:
Winter semester 2023/24
Academic year 1: Module 1 (StEOP), Module 2, Module 3
Academic year 2: Module 7 and Module 8 (reduced number of SEs for transfer students), Module 9
Summer semester 2024
Academic year 1: Module 1 (StEOP), Module 4, Module 5, Module 6
Academic year 2: Module 10 and Module 11 (reduced number of SEs for transfer students), Module 12
