Virtual Exchange (VE) or Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Wednesday 7 July, 15:00-16:00 CEST

Following the productive session hosted by Daniel Nolan (University of Minnesota) at the biannual on his work in virtual exchange/COIL, a requested session is being hosted to offer this discussion to other Aurora academic colleagues. Daniel and the University of Minnesota has been introduced through Aurora and the Extended Aurora partnership on virtual exchange/mobility (COIL).

Virtual exchange (VE) or Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) refers to a type of telecollaboration, different approaches to online intercultural collaboration between our students and students from our international (exchange) partners, engaging in online virtual exchange projects discussing different cultural contexts that form part of their course learnings, supporting internationalisation of the (virtual) classroom, under the guidance of our academic colleagues. COIL is a great opportunity to expand upon the connections with our exchange partners, creating authentic opportunities for intercultural communications and transnational learning, within the virtual classroom, potentially leading to physical mobility but also a developed confidence and understanding of others’ cultures etc, as well as potential to develop co-curricular activities and/or non-academic connections (international pen-pals). Dan has offered to share his experiences delivering COIL activity and the positive outputs it brings for academic colleagues carrying out the delivery.
