The requirements are the Matura or an equivalent graduation as well as a proof of language proficiency, which, however, is not required if you have a school-leaving certificate from a German-speaking country. (Otherwise, you must prove knowledge of the German language at level A2 when applying and knowledge of the German language at level B2 when being admitted).

You can apply online on the homepage of the University of Innsbruck. On the homepage of the University of Innsbruck you will find the field "Online applications". Click on "continue" and complete your application for the "Bachelor's Programme Philosophy".

The ÖH fee is a prerequisite for taking up and continuing your studies and must be paid to the Austrian Student Union (ÖH). Make sure that you pay the ÖH fee in time before the beginning of the respective semester. You can pay the ÖH fee at various machines in the university buildings or online via LFU:online/Meine Daten/Mein Studienbeitrag. If you do not pay the ÖH fee on time, you will be exmatriculated.

The StEOP should be completed positively in the first semester and is a prerequisite for the continuation of the degree programme. In the Bachelor's programme Philosophy, the StEOP consists of the VO Logic and Argumentation (5 ECTS) and the SL Introduction to Philosophy (5 ECTS). You may repeat the StEOP four times (= five attempts). The fourth and fifth examinations are held by board. If the fifth attempt is assessed negatively, the admission to the degree programme expires.

In the first semester, in addition to the StEOP courses (a total of 10 ECTS ), you can complete further courses amounting to 20 ECTS (corresponding to 2 modules). A total of 30 ECTS can therefore be acquired in the first semester.

Further courses can only be completed after positive completion of the StEOP. However, you can already register even though you have not yet completed the StEOP.

The study code is: UC 033 541. Usually you must state the study code when taking examinations.

You can register for the courses via the homepage of the University of Innsbruck. Click on "Quicklinks"/ "Vorlesungsverzeichnis"/ "Philosophisch-Historische Fakultät"/ "Bachelorstudium Philosophie laut Curriculum 2009". Select your respective courses and register. Make sure that you register for the courses within the registration deadline. Under certain circumstances, the registration deadlines for different courses may vary. You can find the registration deadlines for the courses listed in the course catalogue.

The following types of courses (LV) are offered in the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy.

SL: Study orientation course

VO: Lecture

PS: Proseminar

SE: Seminar

Attendance is not compulsory for lectures (VO). The assessment takes place in a single examination, usually at the end of the semester. Attendance is compulsory for the study orientation course (SL), the proseminar (PS) and the seminar (SE). SL, PS and SE have an examination-immanent character, which means that your performance is assessed throughout the semester.

After you have registered for courses, you can check on the homepage of the University of Innsbruck under "Quicklinks"/ "LFU:online"/ "My course registrations" whether your registration for the courses has been confirmed. If your registration is confirmed you can participate in the respective course. If your registration has the status "Registration requested", you must wait until the course instructor confirms your registration. If you do not receive any notification by the beginning of the semester, it is best to directly ask the course instructor.

The Bachelor's programme in Philosophy is composed of modules. The modules usually consist of a VO and a PS or SE. To complete the module, you must pass both the VO and the PS or SE. It is recommended to attend the VO and the PS or SE of a module at the same time. However, you can also attend and complete the VO and the PS or SE in different semesters. However, please note that due to the rotation system of the modules, the respective VO and PS or SE are only offered every three semesters. You only have to attend one PS or SE per module! It is up to you which one you choose, whereby admission is subject to the availability of places.

The Bachelor's programme in Philosophy consists of modules. The modules are mostly composed of VO and PS or SE. When planning your studies, please note that the respective modules are not offered every semester. As a rule, a module is offered every third or fourth semester. It is therefore advisable to take and complete a module when it is offered in order to avoid delays in the course of studies.

The Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy consists of obligatory and optional modules.

To complete your Bachelor's degree, you must complete all obligatory modules. These are:

Introduction to Philosophy (StEOP), Epistemology I, Ethics I, Metaphysics and Ontology I, Social Philosophy and Political Philosophy I and History of Philosophy.

The module "History of Philosophy" consists of four VO. In total, the obligatory modules comprise 70 ECTS-AP.

In addition, you have to complete optional modules amounting to 100 ECTS-AP. You can freely choose which of the optional modules listed in the course catalogue you would like to take. Within the framework of optional module 14 (Interdisciplinary Competences, 10 ECTS) and optional module 15 (Individual Emphasis, maximum 20 ECTS), you can attend or have recognised further courses (from other fields of study) amounting to a maximum of 30 ECTS for the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy.

Please check the course catalogue to find out whether courses take place in attendance and/or online. Attendance is compulsory for SL, PS and SE courses regardless of whether they are held online or in person. Attendance is not compulsory for VO, but it is recommended to attend such courses regularly.

In order to keep to the planned duration of studies, it is recommended to acquire an average of 30 ECTS-AP per semester, i.e. to take 3 modules.

The planned course of study is not compulsory. You are free to choose how many and which modules you take in a semester.

If the subject Latin has not been positively completed at a secondary school to the extent of at least 10 weekly hours, proof of the additional Latin examination must be provided until the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy is completed. You can take the additional Latin examination at the Language Centre of the University of Innsbruck.

OpenOlat is the learning management system of the University of Innsbruck. You can access OpenOlat via the homepage of the University of Innsbruck/ "Quicklinks"/ "OLAT". Among other things, OpenOlat offers you access to messages from course instructors, access to learning materials that are made available, access to the virtual classroom as well as the possibility of an exchange with your fellow students via the forum.

LFU:online is the student portal of the University of Innsbruck. You can access LFU:online via the homepage of the University of Innsbruck/ "Quicklinks" / "LFU:online". LFU:online offers insight and information regarding: "Courses", "My forms", "My data", "My study applications", "My studies", "My exams", "My registrations", "My work", "Booking of appointments", etc.

The virtual classroom (also called virtual lecture hall/virtual seminar room) is an important component of online teaching and is usually offered when a course is held either completely online or hybrid. In the virtual classroom, you can "meet" the lecturer and your fellow students, follow the lecture virtually and, if necessary, write comments in the chat and speak via your microphone. Sometimes it is also possible to switch on the web cam so that you can see your lecturers and fellow students. You can access the virtual classroom via your respective OLAT course / course element "Virtual classroom".

On the homepage of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol, you can browse the book collection of the University Library under "Literature Search" in the search portal "BibSearch" and then place any orders.

A Semesterapparat enables lecturers to make books and other media from the library stock available to their course participants for a semester. The books/media in the semester collection cannot be borrowed for the duration of the semester, but can be used during the opening hours of the library.

Examinations take place in written or oral form. Sometimes exams are also conducted online. The examination mode will be announced by your course instructor. Please take your student ID with you to the examination. In the case of examinations immanent in the course (PS or SE), your overall performance will be assessed. For courses without an immanent examination (SL or VO), the examination takes place as a single examination.

Usually, you must register for examinations in courses without an immanent examination (SL or SE) via the course catalogue. The registration deadlines can be found in the course catalogue. For all other courses (PS or SE), your overall performance will be assessed.

Written online examinations are conducted via OpenOLAT. The course element "Examination" will appear there at examination time. Please do not forget to hand in the 'Eidesstattliche Erklärung'.

You have five examinations. The fourth and fifth examinations take place in a commission.

No, going abroad is not compulsory. 

According to the study plan, the fifth semester is designated for writing the Bachelor's thesis. Since following the study plan is not obligatory, you are free to plan when you write the Bachelor's thesis.

The Bachelor thesis can be written for any optional seminar. Instead of the seminar paper, you write the Bachelor's thesis. Decide early on in which seminar you will write the Bachelor's thesis. You do not have to write the Bachelor's thesis immediately at the end of a seminar, i.e. in the same semester, but make sure that you have not yet completed the seminar before you start writing the Bachelor's thesis. With the submission and positive assessment of the Bachelor's thesis, you then complete the respective seminar and receive further 10 ECTS for it.

No, that is not possible. 

The Bachelor's thesis is to be written in German but can also be written in another language, given that teacher is proficient in this language and agrees to this.

There are thematic overlaps between the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy and the teaching subject Ethics (BA) and, to a certain extent, possibilities of mutual recognition. Equivalence exists between the following courses/modules:

An 'Erweiterungsstudium' offers you the opportunity to acquire knowledge of another discipline. Within the scope of the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy, you can complete the extension programme in Computer Science to the extent of 60 ECTS. Admission to the Erweiterungsstudium in Computer Science requires admission to or already having completed the Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (or other specific studies).

No, writing a Master's thesis is not bound to a seminar. You can therefore complete all seminars without hesitation and then write the Master's thesis. You are largely free to choose the topic. However, the professors will only accept you as a tutor of your Master's thesis if your chosen topic falls within their research focus.

The Master's thesis must be written in German. Another language may be chosen if the supervising person is proficient in this language and agrees.

You can contact your preferred tutor after a course or make an enquiry by email.

In the course of the obligatory module "Vorbereitung der Masterarbeit", you agree with your tutor on the topic, the scope and the form of the Master's thesis on the basis of a brief description of the content (exposé). In addition, you agree on the work processes and discuss the study progress with your supervisor. A time frame for the completion of the Master's thesis is also determined.

The registration form must be signed by your tutor and then handed in by you to the Examinations Office.

It is up to you how long you take to write your Master's thesis. However, try to stick to the time frame that you have set with your supervisor in the compulsory module "Preparation of the Master's Thesis" and avoid delays in your study process.

After the positive assessment of all other compulsory modules and the Master's thesis, the defence of your Master's thesis takes place before an examination board. The examination board consists of the supervisor, another examiner and a chairperson. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the consent of these persons, to coordinate the scheduling and to inform the examination office. During the defence, the Master's thesis is reflected upon in the overall context of the Master's programme in Philosophy.

The teaching subject Ethics (MA) is a planned degree programme at the Faculty of Teacher Education at the University of Innsbruck, which is not yet offered. There will be a limited number of overlaps and credit transfer possibilities, which is why a combination of the Master's programme in Philosophy with the teaching subject Ethics (MA) is definitely worth striving for.

An Erweiterungsstudium offers you the opportunity to acquire knowledge of another discipline. As part of the Master's degree programme in Philosophy, you can complete the extension programme Entrepreneurship with 45 ECTS at the University of Innsbruck. Admission to the extension programme Entrepreneurship requires admission to or already having completed the Master's programme in Philosophy (or another specific programme).

The equivalence of the degree of a Master's programme at a university of applied sciences, a diploma programme at a university of applied sciences or a Master's programme similar to a Master's programme at a university of applied sciences is determined by an individual examination. If only individual supplements are still outstanding in order to achieve full equivalence, the Rectorate is entitled to combine the determination of equivalence with the requirement of examinations to be completed during the doctoral programme in philosophy.

You are largely free to plan your dissertation, both in terms of time and concept.

The dissertation must be written in German. Another language may be chosen if the supervising person is proficient in this language and agrees.

For the registration you need the signatures of your tutors. The "Anmeldung der Dissertation" has to be submitted to the Examinations Office (location Innrain 52d). If you need financial or material support from an institution of the Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck for your dissertation, you also have to submit the "Beilage 2" to the Examinations Office.

You are largely free to plan the timing of your dissertation project.

The form is to be deposited in the examination office. The examination board is composed of the three examiners you have listed in the form for the registration of the dissertation defence. One of the examiners chairs the examination board.
