The talk "Art and the Sociology of Popular Music: Understanding Contemporary Trends in 'Global' Music" will address questions of dominance and power in how musical trends are understood with the explosion in 'world music' across the globe. Using a framework of how the construction of musical 'selves' and 'others' takes place in different societies, some important trends in global music will be presented and analysed.
