Foundational Research and Philosophy of Religion

Philosophy of religion is applied philosophy. It must be done with competence in philosophy more generally, including the foundational questions that philosophy is responsible for asking. These include metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, feminist and critical philosophy, and others. Importantly, philosophy of religion is distinct from apologetics. Whereas apologetics aims to convince people to believe or practice some religion, philosophy of religion is philosophy, deploying thinking that is genuinely exploratory as well as critical. ICPR members work both on these foundational questions and their applications to philosophy of religion.
