Master’s Programme Slavonic Studies

Would you like to deepen your knowledge of Russian and a second Slavic language and acquire intercultural and communicative skills in addition to a critical approach to texts and media?

The students in the Master’s Degree Programme in Slavonic Studies deepen their knowledge about Slavonic linguistics, literature and culture. They also acquire language proficiency in two of the languages offered at the Institute. Graduates of this programme are able to independently analyse, discuss and present Slavonic topics at an academically professional level. They are able to find innovative solutions to complex socio-political issues.

Please note: the language of instruction for this programme is German.

Graduates possess highly specialized knowledge in the fields of Slavonic language, literature and cultural science. They develop skills in terms of language proficiency and the use of linguistic, literary, cultural and media science methods (focusing on film). They are able to independently formulate and substantiate scientific arguments and to find innovative solutions to problems.

The Master's Programme Slavonic Studies is based on the bachelor's programme and is intended for scientific (further) education. Students are increasingly guided towards autonomous acquisition of knowledge, independent further education and open-minded and critical examination of the social environment of Russia and other countries with a Slavonic official language.

The practical language skills in Russian are oriented towards practical job requirements and language understanding in multilingual situations. Productive and receptive skills in a second Slavonic language are developed.

The aim of linguistic education is theoretical consolidation of knowledge about the system and functions of the Russian language in past and present. The literary studies part of the education mainly deals with literary texts from the Russian language area. Students deepen and extend the methods and techniques of individual analysis and interpretation as well as of the translation of literary texts. Cultural science and intercultural competence are to be completed by the analysis of cultural environments focusing on the field of media.

The master's programme conveys in-depth knowledge of the interactions between language, media and culture. It enables students to professionally and scientifically deal with the skills acquired and educates Eastern Europe specialists.

The Master's Programme Slavonic Studies opens a wide range of occupational perspectives with different areas of activities. Graduates are Eastern Europe specialists and work in press, radio and television as well as in international companies, tourism, cultural policy, publishing and diplomatic service. Apart from the occupational fields mentioned, the master's programme also qualifies for a scientific career.
