Habilitation lecture: Local flow effects in the atmospheric boundary layer over mountainous terrain

Manuela Lehner

ACINN, University of Innsbruck, Austria

Mountains impact atmospheric flows in a multitude of ways and on a wide range of different spatial and temporal scales: First, the heterogeneity of the topography and the land use result in local thermally driven circulations, ranging from slope winds over small inclined surfaces to the mountain-plain circulation acting at the scale of whole mountain ranges. Second, mountain ranges and individual small-scale terrain features pose obstacles to existing flows, inducing secondary effects, such as flow displacement and mountain waves.

In this presentation, I will give an overview of some of the work I have been involved in over the past few years to gain a better understanding of the above processes. In particular, I want to stress the point that a combination of different tools, such as observational data analysis and numerical modeling, dedicated field campaigns allowing to monitor processes at a high spatial resolution and long-term measurements are necessary to tackle the many questions related to the mountain boundary layer.
