- Workshop on Natural Hazards and Risks
Thirty researchers from the social and natural sciences gathered in Innsbruck to discuss inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to natural hazard risk research. The meeting focused on mountain regions.
12.06.2025 - Major Weather Research Initiative in the Alps
From 16 June to 25 July, an international team led by meteorologists from the University of Innsbruck is conducting extensive measurements in the Inn and Adige valleys, the Sarntal Alps, and the Bavarian Alpine foothills. The data will help deepen our understanding of air exchange processes over mountainous terrain and the links between local, regional, and global weather processes. As part of a year-long observational campaign data are also collected using research aircraft.
11.06.2025 - Meteorological Measurement Campaign Launched
The international research consortium TEAMx is set to conduct a large-scale meteorological measurement campaign in the Inn and Adige valleys, as well as the German Alpine foothills, during 2024/25. The campaign aims to gather comprehensive data to improve the understanding of air exchange processes over mountainous regions. Scientific coordination is being led by the Department of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences, where a recent kick-off meeting marked the start of the initiative.

News and Events of our Faculty
New curriculum for Bachelor of Science of Atmosphärenwissenschaften starting 1. October 2025, here.
In the presence of Vice-Rector Jeanette Walde (VR Teaching and Students), outstanding dissertations and a master's thesis (completed in STJ 2023/24) from our faculty were honoured at a ceremony in the Archaeological Museum on 13 June 2025. These are:
• Ariana Moleenar for her dissertation ‘Natural Seismographs: A Stratigraphic Study on the Effects of Earthquakes on Subaqueous Surface Sediments’.
• Bernhard Grüner for his dissertation "Lifestyle (Im)Mobilities Across Alpine Space and Society. Interactions of Lifestyle Movers and Lifestyle Farmers with the Cultural Landscape of the European Eastern Alps".
• Stephanie Benischke for her master's thesis ‘Reconstructing Holocene Lake Level Changes at Lago Llanquihue (South-Central Chile) based on field mapping, seismic-stratigraphic analysis and lacustrine sediment core analysis’.
For the first time this year, the teaching awards for special commitment to teaching, which were initiated by Vice-Rector Bernhard Fügenschuh, were also presented. Members of the general staff were also eligible for this award. The winners were nominated by the three student representatives, who developed a multi-stage process and coordinated closely with each other. The winners were:
• Ivana Stiperski (Institute of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences) for ‘her tireless commitment, her enthusiasm for one of the most complex, least understood phenomena in classical physics, but her still approachable and open-minded way of engaging with her students’ (Excerpt from the laudatory speech by the Atmospheric Sciences Student Council).
• Klaus Förster (Institute of Geography), who "as coordinator of the curriculum [...] juggles timetables, room availability, preference systems and the often conflicting wishes of teachers and students. In doing so, he achieves one thing: fairness. He listens, mediates and organises in such a way that, in the end, it suits everyone as much as possible" (excerpt from the laudatory speech by the Geography Student Council).
• Clifford Patten (Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography) for "your tireless work, your openness, your clarity in teaching and your genuine commitment to education [...]. For many, you are a shining example of what excellent teaching at a university can and should look like" (excerpt from the laudatory speech by the StV Earth Sciences).
