The Unit of Economic and Social History is now called Unit of Economic, Social and Environmental History (WSUG).
By expanding our name from Economic and Social History to Economic, Social and Environmental History, we are acknowledging the international development of the subject and also expressing what has been practised in research and teaching in our unit for many years. We have not only examined the historical connections between economic and social change, but have also focussed on the central interplay between socio-economic and ecological processes. By correlating the three categories of sustainability – economic, social and environmental – and analysing them in their historical dimensions, we also contribute to the current debates on sustainable development by giving them historical depth and thus greater significance.
