Expe­ri­ences of dis­crim­i­na­tion at the Univer­sity of Inns­bruck

Study on the experience of discrimination among students at the UIBK


Duration: October 1, 2023 - January 31, 2025

Objectives:

The main goal of this study is to gain insights into the experiences and observations of discrimination among students from the Faculties of Business and Management, Educational Sciences, and Philosophy and History, and the master’s Programme Gender, Culture and Social Change at the Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck. These insights will help define institutional responsibilities.

The overarching goal is to increase equal opportunities at the University of Innsbruck and to promote targeted structural adjustments to move closer to the ideal of a discrimination-free and inclusive university.

Methodology:

  1. Qualitative Method: Conducting (online) individual interviews with 15-20 students, using pseudonymization and evaluating the data through content and discourse analysis methods.
  2. Quantitative Method: Implementing an online survey with anonymized data collection.

Innovation:

  • First insight into subjective experiences of discrimination, exploratory character.

  • Development of specific measures in an empowering workshop.

Potential Risks and Burdens:

Participation in the survey on experiences and observations of discrimination can evoke emotional reactions. Participation is voluntary and can be terminated at any time without giving reasons.

Timeline:

  • 2023-2024: Conducting and evaluating individual interviews, designing and implementing the online questionnaire.
  • 2024-2025: Presentation of results, publication of the final report, conducting an empowerment workshop.

  • Application of the study design to other faculties, continuous improvement of the university environment.

Topic: Experiences of Discrimination at the University of Innsbruck

Dear students,

As part of my study on investigating discrimination experiences at the University of Innsbruck, I am looking for students willing to report on their experiences or observations in individual interviews. The aim of the study is to gain a deeper insight into the discrimination experiences of UIBK students to develop measures to promote a discrimination-free and inclusive university culture.

Why participate?

  • Your voice counts and contributes to the improvement of university culture.

Who can participate?

  • Students from the Faculties of Business and Management, Educational Sciences, and Philosophy and History; and
  • Students in the master’s Programme Gender, Culture and Social Change.

Scientific Practice:

  • The interviews will be pseudonymized and your data will be treated confidentially. The audio part will be recorded and deleted immediately after transcription.
  • Participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw from the study at any time without giving reasons.
  • The interviews last approximately one hour and are conducted online.
  • If personal information is disclosed during the interview (this is not planned, but can happen), it will not be transcribed (i.e. blacked out).
  • It is also possible to answer the questions in writing.
  • The interviews can be conducted in German or English.

  • The survey is conducted anonymously.
  • The survey will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. There is also space to describe your own experiences and observations in more detail in free text fields.
  • You can save the survey and continue at a later time.
  • You can cancel the survey at any time.
  • There are no "right" or "wrong" answers.
  • All data will be treated with strict confidentiality.
  • Should it happen that personal information is given in the free text fields (this is not intended, but can occur), these will be removed and will not be included in the evaluation.The questionnaire is available in German and English.
