Decolonizing Practices of Thinking and Doing Sexuality, Race and Gender Justice

Zeit: SAMSTAG, 09. November 2019, 11:30 Uhr
Ort: Campus Universitätsstraße, Universitätsstraße 15, Hörsaal 1 (EG), Innsbruck

In this paper I explore an intellectual and activist trajectory of thinking and doing sexuality, race and gender justice decolonially. I draw on a journey that began with embodied anti-racist (specifically anti-Muslim) struggle in the 1980s weaving its way through grassroots organising and resistance (Safra Project) to advocating and campaigning for intersectional anti-discrimination law and policy at national (Stonewall) and international levels (UN) in the 1990s and early 2000s. More recently, from the gates of the colonial ivory towers of the northern European University, I theorise and reflect retrospectively towards a present-future of thinking and doing sexuality, race and gender justice. This has involved a number of strategies and initiatives including: resisting erasure and (epistemic) violence through building an archive of Queer Decolonial Studies, intersectional coalition building and capacity building in society including universities (see https://research.kent.ac.uk/sergj/kaleidoscope-network-decolonising-the-university/) demanding and negotiating new forms of publishing (Decolonizing Sexualities, 2019, CounterPress). Another world is (im)possible through thinking and doing decolonially both at individual and collective levels.

Suhraiya Jivraj is a Senior Lecturer in Kent Law School. Her work draws on critical race/religion theories and feminist/queer of colour de-colonial perspectives to explore contemporary socio-legal problematics in the fields of law and religion, equalities, anti-discrimination and human rights law, gender and sexuality and Islamic family law. She is the Co-ordinator and Principle Investigator of the Decolonizing Sexualities Network which brings together a transnational network of scholars and civil society activists working across issues of race, religion, sexuality and gender.
