Students can choose from five exercises with increasing levels of difficulty, each consisting of an introductory video and a corresponding practical task. In the video, participants are introduced to the task and the techniques and commands required to solve the task using an easy-to-understand example. The practical task is strongly based on the example used in the video, but both the data and the questions are randomized using R/exams and are therefore slightly different for all participants in each attempt. This ensures that the knowledge acquired in the video is transferred to the new question. Through the integration in Open Olat, the participants also receive direct feedback and can see if/where mistakes have been made and can repeat the (randomized) task several times if necessary to consolidate the techniques.
Reto Stauffer summarizes: "In the summer semester 2023, over 40 percent of our students took on the offer, and a good third answered more than half of all questions correctly. The positive feedback and high level of participation encourages us to continue offering the course in the future and expand it if necessary." The course was also highly praised by the peers, who would like to obtain the teaching competence certificate and were therefore asked for their assessment of the course and its development.
