About us

We are pleased about your interest in the Institute of Romance Studies at the Leopold-Franzens-University of Innsbruck. At our institute, which is rich in tradition, we offer the opportunity to study the Romance languages French, Italian and Spanish in a dynamic, international environment at the alpine-urban campus at teacher training/specialist bachelor and teacher training/specialist master level.

Since 1899, our international faculty has been researching and teaching the diverse cultures, literatures, media cultures and linguistic varieties of the three Romance languages, French, Italian and Spanish, which evolved from Late Latin. In close cooperation with the regional and country centres of the University of Innsbruck, it is our concern to explore the European as well as the American and African linguistic and cultural areas of the Romance languages and to deal with them extensively in the classroom. We focus primarily on current aspects of Romance languages and modern media, but also provide insights into the eventful history of Romance-speaking countries, such as Argentina, France, Italy, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Senegal or Spain.

Extensive language skills and intercultural competences are required in many professions today. Therefore, in addition to excellent language training by native speakers and a very good, personal support situation, fundamental components of our research and teaching offer are the imparting of sound knowledge in language, literature, media and cultural studies of the individual philologies, with special consideration of your own interests and the innovative research core areas of our lecturers. In our research and teaching, we also provide insights into other Romance languages, including Catalan, Galician, Romanian and Portuguese. Numerous guest lectures by renowned international academics also contribute to academic exchange each semester and round off the wide range of flexible courses offered at our Institute of Romance Studies.

Constant practical relevance through teaching internships, participation in research and study project groups and, above all, stays abroad at one of our numerous partner universities, for example in Argentina, Belgium, Chile, France, Italy, Canada, Cuba, Mexico or Spain, allow you to immerse yourself in the application fields of our subject or your favourite language and cultural areas.
