This is our go-to place in Innsbruck’s old town for taking international academic visitors of our Language Testing Research Group for traditional Austrian cuisine. So, I really like this place, not only because of their roof terrace in summer or because they just might do the best veal “Schnitzel” in the city, but also because I associate it with lots of great meals that I have shared here with many of my mentors, role models, and friends. Booking in advance is recommended.

Restaurant Lichtblick/ 360° Bar

As the name suggests, going to the Lichtblick will be a ray of hope after a long conference day. If you fancy a drink after, then go next door to the 360° Bar and enjoy a stunning view over Innsbruck. Both places are on the pricey side, but definitely worth the money. See you there!

If you are looking for local, seasonal and sustainable food, the restaurant "die Wilderin" got you covered! The siblings who run this restaurant offer a great atmosphere within the heart of the Alps. Table reservations in advance are highly recommended.

Piano bar is a restaurant hidden in the middle of the old city center, very close to the Golden Roof. More than once have we celebrated our Research Group's Christmas dinners here and had a fab time! Piano bar has a cosy courtyard where you can dine outside in summer. They do steaks to perfection but also have some vegetarian options. Booking in advance highly recommended.

If you like authentic Italian food and good drinks, this is the place to go to. They offer antipasti, pasta and delicious pizza. I highly recommend pizza “Napoli in the Summer” and a glass of Lugana wine. You’ll definitely have a great time here. Booking in advance is recommended.

Looking for mouth-watering Italian dishes and the probably best pizza in town? Una Pizza has not only been voted Tyrol’s favorite pizzeria in the past, it is also located just a few steps from the conference venue! I love to enjoy warm summer evenings with amazing food on their cozy terrace. Booking in advance highly recommended.

The Café Central is a Viennese style coffee house, offering cakes and traditional Austrian meals, including some lighter and vegetarian options. I would consider the Central good value and it offers an attractive outdoor seating area which is fantastic on hot summer evenings. It is quite a large place and you will often get a seat right away.

If you like cakes and you want to savour the very best Central European baking traditions have to offer, you should most definitely seek out this small café in the Old Town. It is the oldest pastry shop of the Tyrol and has a spotless reputation when it comes to taste and quality. Cash only.

You would like to celebrate a successful presentation and splurge some cash? Dunlin is the place. It is an intimate yet friendly cocktail bar that takes mixology seriously but is still laid back and uncomplicated. Wine, beer, smaller snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks are also on offer. Given the quality of the drinks, the Dunlin is a moderately priced option – and I find it more reliable and friendly than some other cocktail bars in Innsbruck.

The Treibhaus is probably the best place in town if you’re looking for student-friendly prices for drinks and food in a laid-back atmosphere. Situated in a backyard near the conference venue, it is easy to reach but not spotted by many tourists. In summer, their large terrace invites you to have a “Spritzer” (wine with sparkling water) outside. The Treibhaus also happens to be a fantastic concert venue for jazz, contemporary world music, and a lot in between – check their program in advance to see what is on. Cash only.

The name is an allusion to the German saying “wo sich Fuchs und Hase gute Nacht sagen” meaning in the middle of the sticks. Despite the suggestion of the name, this bar is within walking distance of the conference venue in the old town of Innsbruck next to the Domplatz. In summer, you can sit outside and enjoy sandwich creations and good wine and cocktails. Booking in advance is recommended.

I love to hang out with friends at this bar. Especially in summer, relaxing in their sidewalk garden, savoring the last gleams of the evening sun before it sets behind the mountains. They serve delightful drinks, featuring a selection of good wines and a small, but tempting choice of cocktails (my personal go-to is their Moscow Mule). This relaxed neighborhood bar is a great choice if you like to play pool or darts. In addition, they serve great food and have a lovely terrace for you to enjoy a drink or two. Die Wäscherei is a five-minute walk from the main station and a bit off the tourist track, so if you want to feel like a local, give them a try!
