Capturing CO2 at the source and the associated environmental risks

Armin Wisthaler

Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, Norway

Amine-based post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) efficiently reduces CO2 emissions from industrial point sources. Given the urgency of rapid CO2 emission cuts from the industry, PCCC is rapidly moving towards a deployment at large scales. A risk that derives from the widespread use of this technology is the emission of amines and amine degradation products to the atmosphere, with potential adverse impacts on human health and the environment. Norway has leading competence in PCCC and its associated environmental risks, and my group at the University of Oslo has intensively studied the release and atmospheric fate of amines emitted from CO2 capture facilities. In my talk, I will give an introduction to amine-based PCCC and present selected results from our studies on emission characterization, atmospheric chemistry and plume modelling.
